When a hero falls off the pedestal
Article Link
Joe Paterno is merely the latest heroic figure to fall. Think Tiger Woods or Bernard Madoff. All had been widely seen as above reproach. Were they bad people, or are we a bunch of suckers?

That's not even the full article. Let me just say that yes, they are all bad people (Tiger probably the least so, he only cheated on his wife). A complete lack of moral conviction, or lack of ability to act on said morals, is what defines a bad person, IMO. And just because someone doesn't reveal what a piece of shit they are, doesn't mean they aren't one. You might be able to put lipstick on a pig, but I suppose it eventually wears off.

Here, let me run a hugely successful football program but ignore the fact that one of my coaches may be sexually assaulting children. I'll do my legally obligated minimum which is pass it up the chain of command in my organization. According to CNN, the former makes me a hero, while the latter is just a footnote.

Or, let me swindle people out of hundreds of millions of dollars (did Bernie reach the $B territory?) by running a ponzi scheme. And of course I'll end up getting convicted. According to CNN, the generation of my wealth makes me a hero, but the fact that it ended up being through illegal means which destroyed the assets of thousands upon thousands of people is merely a footnote.

Tiger cheating on his wife? Meh, really. That's between him and his wife. The other two affected communities and/or society at large. Does it make him a bit of a scumbag? I suppose so. But there's a huge chasm between adultery and the above if you ask me.

What a bunch of morons.

Anybody who says Tiger Woods is bad person clearly didn't have hot chicks throwing offering to suck cock on a daily basis while still rejecting them like a true puritan.

I have an issue calling any sports figure or money manager "hero". Someone needs to explain to me how either could be considered a hero. And I love sports, almost any sport, but I would be hardpressed to consider any athlete or coach as a hero.

Today is the first time in probably 6 months I've gone to CNN.com. I wanted to check on hurricane Isaac...see how LA and MO are doing (they are two of our biggest markets) and maybe check out the election coverage.

I read the headline for your article, saw Madoff listed as a hero that fell off his pedestal and immediately closed the site.

They are worthless idiots. Always will be.

What do they all have in common and CNN has it right.

While they are making the rich money they are heroes, as soon as they start to fall they become zeroes.

That was a good article. You should probably bone up on your reading comprehension. It is an astute observation that all these peoples are glorified for their success and admired and then all of them had a fall from grace via the relatively benign infidelities of Tiger to the criminal acts of Madoff and the willful ignorance and non-action of Paterno.

And if you got past your misplaced self-righteousness in the first few paragraphs, it goes on to discuss why society holds such people above reproach while they are on top.

There's certainly a different culture in the United States when it comes to sports. College sports especially. It's something you just don't see here in Canada. Though a big part of that is that most people know hockey players are pigs.

Not being a sports guy, I really don't understand why these people become idolized to the point of infallibility. They're people and athletes certainly don't have a positive track record outside the field.

At least Tiger didn't stick his finger in our faces and lie his guts out dragging the country through a prolonged ordeal like someone else we know.

Well, even aside from cheating on his wife, I think Tiger's always been a dick who just happens to be really good at golf.
