Yeah as it seems that HD has a low list of servers..... However I don't know how many still play the original. I guess I'll install the original later and see how many active servers pop up.

Plus if it's the same game with a shiny coat of paint.....I don't know if it's exactly worth getting? The original doesn't look that bad, plus since it is older, it's easier to host lan games on various PCs. However I suppose if a lot of people play online and if they added anything things then maybe?

I do know that Serious Sam The First & Second Encounter did well. The spin off sequel on consoles failed.....Serious Sam: The Next Encounter & the official sequel Serious Sam II flopped. So I suppose when all else fails remake the good ones. ;)

I'm sure Serious Sam III will go back to what made the first two games work.

So besides prettier visuals. What makes Serious Samn HD different than the original?

I bought this during the holiday sale. It's the same game, but it has better graphics(obviously) and also has some nice Steam implementation. It's not a deep game by any means, but it's still fun and action packed.

Someone hosts a game and you can join their game or send and receive invites to it right through the Steam friends list UI, which is really cool. No need to look through a server browser if you're trying to play with friends. My friends and I never even needed to open any ports on our routers either, the game just works. There's also that Steam cloud thing where your game progress and settings stick with you no matter what PC you play the game on when you log into your Steam account. There's also achievements which are pretty fun.

Croteam says they are adding dedicated server support and a deathmatch mode in an upcoming patch.

Here's a screenshot I took of the game a while ago:

Hey, I bought the preorder for almost $18. Consider yourself lucky.

Does Valve understand that having sales like this so close to the release of the software they are training everyone to wait for the big sale rather than to buy at full price or even a small discount for a preorder?

You are correct Keith, L4D2 was the same way. I think my friends payed $44.99 pre order and last week it was $33.99.

For those who already own the original Serious Sam I highly recommend to not buy HD, it's exactly the same thing except it has better graphics and has better multi-player support (trying to play the first one on-line won't be worth it considering how rarely people actually play that older version on-line, when they can, that is), unless of course you're a graphics whore then, heh, go for it, and that at price I guess it wouldn't kill anyone's ego.

And indeed Second Encounter HD might well be released sometime this summer I would presume, or perhaps before who knows, but it will be released in HD, it was confirmed already. The thing is that once both are released in HD they will do the inevitable Serious Sam HD + Second Encounter HD pack for a special price, either on Steam or not, but it will happen for sure, something along the lines of «pre-order Second Encounter HD now and get Serious Sam HD for free!» or «Buy SE HD this week-end and save 50% on SS HD!»...

In the end, if you really want to get Serious Sam HD although you've played the original then I suggest to just wait until Second Encounter HD comes out and get a special package instead. Because I for one wouldn't pay more than $5 per game, I've already played the original and Second Encounter years ago, I don't feel like spending more money on games I already bought. I haven't bought SS HD yet although I admit I was tempted at first, but all I had to do was to go on YouTube, watch a couple of HD videos of it for around half an hour only to entirely lose all interests in it.

Sorry Zenoth I disagree with you to an extent. At full price no I would not buy it. At $6 and some change this is a good deal. The ease of joining co-op and hosting a server is a piece of cake. The eye candy is extremely well done and looks great. While there is no deathmatch now I have read it will be coming soon in a patch.

The original while a great game was/is buggy and sometimes impossible to play online or lan. Now you will find hardly anyone playing online.

I would pay $10 or less to revisit an old game and play co-op online with the simple ease of a couple mouse clicks. The original price of $20 though I doubt it.

EDIT: Sorry I forgot to say I do have it and paid $9.99

As I said in my first paragraph, at this price currently it isn't anything bad at all. I for one will wait until both HD versions are available in some special price package probably on Steam sometime this year, to consider. For me the only good reason to get both HD versions isn't because there's "10,000 more polygons" (like the ads funnily advertised) but because the multi-player was basically resurrected after all those years, and I will surely play on-line in co-operation.

I see it similarly to how Quake 3 Live bumped up the interest in on-line Quake 3 after all that time, it's a good thing when developers do that for their beloved products of the past, I won't deny it, black on white it can only be a good thing for gaming in my opinion, but my reaction in comparing the original SS to SS HD is probably due to how much I played the original back in the days, which allows me to "be patient" and wait for some special deal, and if I do buy SS HD it will be part of it.

I would have bought this for $20 or $10 definitely. I just didn't know it was out yet. $7 is low enough that I'll mess with Steam again to play it.

does lan co-op and online co-op

Forgot to add no hassle server setup. I have hosted quite a few Co-op servers and never had to open a port or a hassle. The server name goes by your Steam username. So if you host just have the other people look for server by your steam handle.
