Serious Sam 2 is awesome :) Anyone still play?

It's Seriously Fun blasting the crap out of billions of wacky baddies

Pretty good graphics for its age too, and reasonably demanding still (i get an average of about 50fps at 1600x1200 and every in game option maxed on the shield generator demo benchmark with a stock Q6600/4850@790/1013).

However, I can't get it to run without black bars at 1920x1200, even although it's a standard resolution option in the game settings.

It kinda squishes it into what looks like a demented 4:3 aspect in the middle, and same for 1920x1080.

Screen is an LG L246WHX (24" 1920x1200).

Does anyone who's got a copy feel like pulling it out and seeing if you get this issue too?

Tried checking this out?
I have it but I don't have the time to try right now (also have a 1920x1200 monitor and HD4850). Might do later if it's still helpful.

You, Sir, are truly a god among men! :beer:x777

Did the Aspect Ratio change & LODBias change, works perfectly now 🙂

Shield Generator demo benchmark dropped me to 44 fps avg, still perfectly playable in my book.

Will crank the old quad up to 3Ghz and see if it gives me a hand, but I am indeed a content & happy man 🙂

I looooooooove SS. It's my favorite series. I posted on the Console forum that SS HD is coming out this year in anticipation of SS3 in the next couple of years.

Is SS2 truly better than it's reviews? I've not played it, but the reviews generally gave it a 6/10 or 7/10.

I loved both SS1 the first and second encounters

It took me quite a bit longer to get into than SS1 & the second encounter, but I'm really getting in to it again now, and really enjoying it (guess I'm a few hours in, freed the shaman and got to the top of the big sinkhole...) 🙂

Graphics are a big step up from SS1 & the second encounter (although I thought they were superb examples of that generation of engines), and gratifyingly brutal on even pretty modern hardware (my 4850@790/1013 is no slouch!)...

EDIT: At the time it came out I think I had a 6600GT, and the SS2 demo made it cry :Q

Serious Sam 2 is very weak compared to the first games. And I am in a good frame of mind for the comparison. I just beat 1st Encounter again this past week and am halfway done with the 2nd Encounter.
Must have beaten each of them a dozen times so far. Serious Sam 2 I got tired of before I even completed it once.

Mind going into detail?

I loved the first two episodes, but never got around to getting SS2. Was thinking about picking it up, but will pass if it's really that bad.

Holy crap, you just made my evening. SS was one of my fav games of all time for the sheer sillyness, massive enemy raids, funny sayings, and beatiful graphics. I still occasionally look at some screen shots I took in game and they look pretty nice, even today. Can't wait to give the updated version a try!

EDIT, found one of my old pics. Still looks nice

I can only explain it that for the first few levels it just felt..off, I guess, as has been said by others in this thread.

I am of the opinion that it is improving quite noticeably as I get into it, and I'm enjoying it a lot now...

You should be able to pick it up for very little these days, so what's to lose? 🙂

I need to hunt down the first two again...

I played the crap out of the original Serious Sam, 16 player online coop was kickass. I tried Serious Sam 2, but it just seemed like they tried to hard. I wish they they were releasing the new eye candy'd up version of the XBLA release on the PC tho, that one looks really good, even if it only supports 4 player coop.

I played through all of SS2 with a friend in co op, and it was really fun (just like its predecessors). That's my favorite part of the SS games - you can do the whole thing in co op mode.

Yep, something just got lost in the sequel. Everything felt off.

I think the problem was the uneven level design...you would suddenly transition from one huge area to one that shoe-horned you down a static path - and you would die if you deviated too far from the path. IMO the vehicle levels made up for it somewhat (i.e. fighting the huge mechanical spiders).

The final level was ridiculously tough...took me days and many reloads to finish on Hard difficulty. Looking forward to the next episode, though.

Ok, so I reinstalled it after all 😀
I forgot just how much FUN this game is! And for a 2005 game from a low budget developer, the graphics aren't bad at all.

I loved this game. If I still owned it I would definitely give it another whirl. For some reason when I was playing Ratchet & Clank a little while ago, it made me think of this game. 😕

It's a brutal engine, no doubt (1920x1200 everything maxed and max AA(edge detect - quality)/AF options makes my 4850@790/1013 just adequate).

Really enjoying it now, and are you serious about Co-op again? Can I Co-op over LAN?
