Serious router help needed

Hey guys,

I have only posted in here a few times well i am having some serious problems. my roommate and i got cable internet from mediacom with only one ip address. i got a router a linksys ( BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router). The problem I am having is that I cant get the internet to work on her computer but it works fine on mine. I don't really know how to set it up. I mean i know how to get into the configuration but i cant get hers going at all. It sucks can anyone help???? I would really appreciate it. I am getting frustrated, I am sure there are some geniouses out there. Ok both of our systems are XP Professional and the IP I have is 192.168.1.1

12.218.37.97 is my ip
255.255.255.0 is my subnet mask
default gateway is 12.218.37.1

sorry about the confusion have never done this before

Hers are

IP 192.168.1.101
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.128
Default Gateway 192.168.1.12


I am so confused I just want this too work, hee hee. My connection (guy) works fine but nothing on hers

ok heres the deal i logged into the router but i have no clue how to set it up... i went through the step by step guide but all i know is i have one ip address and thats it..

Internet works on your computer, and does not on hers?

Does not sound like a Router problem, unless 192.168.1.101 is manualy set and it is out of the Router's band of available IPs.

Go over her computer settings, and try first to see if you can network the two computers.

WoW, something is mess up there. Well lets do this, first of all make sure you connect the cable from your modem to the wan port of the router. Then make sure your computer and your friend computer connected to the switched port on the router (4 of them I believe). Go log on to your router using the default IP address (look in the manual; if the setup has been changed, find out how to reset the router to default configuration).
Since you have cable internet I dont think that you need to enter username/password in the router.
Now I am sure when the cable is plugged in correctly and the router is reset to default, and Make sure you setup yours and your friends computer to use DHCP. I am quite sure that internet should work from both computer.

ok here is the deal i jsut got back online this seems messed up and i have been messing with it for like 2 hours now..... The cable modem ethernet cable is connected to the uplink jack and mine is connected to port 3... everything goes dead when they are in different places....

and well i have gone through the manual four times i tells me to go to 192.168.1.1 to set the router. i did it the one time and it went to that site now it wont it just comes up page not displayed. this is pissing me off hardcore

First off, the ONLY place the broadband modem should be plugged is the WAN port, NOT the uplink port! This is a router, and the whole purpose is to buffer you from the Internet and provide NAT services so multiple computers can share a single Internet IP address.

I suggest you read the documentation that came with the router, reset it to factory defaults, remove all the networking components from your systems, and start over. Broadband routers are usually very easy to get running, but only if you connect them properly...

I completely understand this by all means but how the hell am i supposed to check in here to see how i am supposed to get this up and going if that is the only means to get on the internet? I have read through the manual and i cant get it going

Ok, I'm not familiar with that router but....

1. unplug the cables from your router.
2. There should be a button on it that will reset the router to factory defaults. Usually this is recessed. Takes like a ball point pen to press.

3. After you do that. unplug the power on your cable modem and your router.
4. plug in your cable modem to the WAN port on your router (straight through cable). Plug you and your GFs computers into 2 of the 4 ports on the router. (to the nic cards on the back of your computers. Use straight-through cables only!).

5. Plug in the power to your cable modem. Let it cycle until you get good lights.

6. plug the power into the router.

7. Let me know if that works.

Thanks man.... I am still at it..... I cant get the bastard to work but i am gonna try it and if not i can always go throught the uplink till we can get it solved

Can you plug the Cat 5 cable from the Cable Modem directly to your or her system and does the internet work that way with both computers one at a time? If so I am pretty sure XP is set up correctly for DHCP and your cable probably a straight through cable. If that works plug the Cat 5 cable from the Cable Modem to the WAN port on back of the router!! Make sure it's the WAN And NOT Uplink or 1-4. I have that router by the way and the manual so can help. Plug a Straight Through (NOT Crossover) cable from Port 1 to your system and port 2 to her system. Log into the router with 192.168.1.1 and you will need to tell it the connection type. Most if not all cable is DHCP and NOT PPPoE. Make sure it's also set for DHCP. I will dig my manual out and go through the settings in case you need more help.

I can't get any connections working when anything is in the wan port. I have the following

sas.r21.mchsi.com

LAN
MAC 00-04-5A-E7-ED-55
IP 192.168.1.1
255.255.255.0

WAN 10.25.245.72
MAC 00-04-5A-E7-ED-56
Default Gateway 10.25.245.1
DNS 12.223.4.8
DNS 12.223.4.9

MINE 192.168.1.100
HERS 192.168.1.101

I got all of this stuff but no connection via internet or anything.

where do i do that? I am not that computer orientated man. This is all new to me this router and ips and stuff like that

was her computer ever connected to antoher lan by chance?


you may need to look into her network settings to make sure the correct network connection is being used.

ips look good.

what OS is she and you using?

You have to change her ip to 12.218.37.x , x being any number from 2 to 255 , except 97 which is in use by you .

Change her subnet mask to 255.255.255.0

And change her gateway to match yours. That was the problem the entire time.

Have her match your DNS settings too . I see you listed different ip's in your last post 192.168.1.101 and 100 ? Had you changed them ? If the ip's you listed originally had your connection working than changing them should fix it.
