Serious Question: Athiests... do you believe in love?

Especially those of you who are married...

Atheist Definition: One who does not believe in God or a higher being of any kind.

Belief in God in this poll does not refer specifically to the Christian God, or any other specific religions god... it can also refer to multiple Gods. As long as you believe in a higher being...

I believe in God, and love...

what do you mean by believing in love?

As in can you fall in love with someone, and it be everlasting, commited happily to one person, blah blah blah... and not just a bunch of sex related chemical reactions....

clearer?

I think somebody is going come in here and say that's what love is. or at least what causes it.

Are you asking it as in just the feeling exist, or do you believe the feeling exists, but not for this reason?

In other words, do we deny science and reality so that we can enjoy our own little private delusions?

that's what i guessed you meant but i wanted to be sure

i'm agnostic though leaning towards atheism. imo it's like any other emotions. are emotions, heck are our consciousness "real"? that's a difficult question that probably nobody has an answer to yet. though i'm hoping yes.

sure why wouldn't they?

It seems to me someone can NOT believe in God but still find love. One does not depend on the other.

I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me.

To extend that.....

"Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism's in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in The Beatles, I just believe in me." Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus and I'd still have to bum rides off of people. "

SAVE FERRIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm an atheist and don't believe in love in the traditional sense... but my take on it (the providing of mutual services (the genetically dictated need for companionship and sex)) is that it's a close enough approximation to warrant not giving it much further thought.

Sure. I don't have any doubts about my ability (and tendency) to do that...but I wouldn't go so far as to presume anyone could stand me long enough to put up with that sort of thing. So, in the abstract, "definitely"; whether it can actually be implemented for real is a whole different ball of fish. ...er, kettle of wax. ...or something like that.

There mutualy exclusive.

how so?

i agree that if you belive in god then they are. Since religion (well most) teach that god is love.

BUT if you do not beleive in a god does not mean you can NOT love.

So if a person does not know god/religion then they cant love?

I think he's getting that "love" (as generally known) is simply believed in through faith. Theres nothign tangible/scientific about love. Theres no real legitimate reaosn to believe in love and not God (or vice versa).

Unless you believe love is just a chemical reaction in your brain that is...
