:|:|:|OK I feel like my head is going to explode. I now remeber why I only used this OS for less than a week the first time.
I got a wild hair up my bum bum and decided to give w2k a second chance now that sp2 is availiable. Looks like this fine peice of work from MicroSuck is as sh!tty as it ever was!:|:|:| But now it's a challenge and don't like losing. This has become personal. ;)

Here is my problem. I can't install crap under w2k. Any time I try to download a program or a driver package to install I get errors that won't allow the damn thing to finish. It's different error messages every time too. The only thing that seems constant is anything that has an installer program somehow p!sses my OS off and the install is terminated.

Here is my system:
ASUS k7v mobo Award BIOS rev. 1003
Athlon classic 700@700
640MB PC-133. (Generic, don't ask. I bought a boatload of this stuff from egghead and it's never been problamatic before.)
Maxtor 5703? HDD (Anyway it was the 30GB 7200rpm ATA66 drive that came out right before the Diamond Max series.)
ASUS AGP 6800 (It's a Geforce 256 32MB/DDR.)
Plexwriter 8/4/32
Toshiba DVD-ROM
SBLive MP3+

I did a mid-level format and a clean install for this project. Last time I just upgraded win98 so I thought that could have been part of the problem. Also, Major backwards-compatability issues here too. Is there a patch out there that will help with this, even if it's 3rd party? Is it something I need to change in the registry? I can't even install my video drivers or the VIA 4in1's because the cd for the vid card says NT5 is not supported. Tried to go with nvidia's detenators for w2k and the install crashed. Same with winzip and with M$'s OWN sp2 support tool kit! WTF?? over...:disgust:
I'm using the bundled TNT2 drivers just to be able to look at a normal resolution! Sheesh!:|

I'm going to flash my bios up to 1006 and see if that will help too.

This is a problem I faced in the past but instead of trying to resolve it. I took the easy way out and put win98 back on my machine. I'm wanting to stick it out and find out how to work around/fix these problems. I mean lets face it, w9x won't be around forever. Please give me any good suggestions you might have. Or if you have run into something similar please let me know what you did to fix it.

TIA

Are you logging in as Administrator? If not the problem may be that you do not have sufficent privledge to complete the install. I cannot remember if you pick the default usename that W2K give you what type of your you are assigned. I think that you will need to log off and log back in as the Administrator to get anything installed correctly (or make your user a member of the Admin group

If the problem is not your priveleges in win2k o.s. I would definately suspect the mobo bios & peripheral drivers.

Good luck

Well. It's definately not my priv's because I was using the administrator profile all night. I just got back to this tonight and finished flashing my BIOS to the most current release. hopefully this will make some difference. I too beloeve that it could be playing a role in my problems with w2k. I just finished doing another format and am doing a clean install right now. There are still several drivers that i need to update on my mobo, but I'm taking this one step at a time so I'll know for sure what the fix action was.

Thanks for the replies so far.

If anyone has something to share please do. Maybe I'm missing something simple. I'll keep you all posted on my progress (or lack there of).

Thanks again.

BTW, I also heard that having the PNP setting enabled in BIOS screws with XP. I'm switching that setting to off for this install just in case the same is true for 2000.;)
