Serious Mouse Problems...3 mice, can't get one working

Greetings,

My MS Explorer mouse died yesterday 🙁 I went to the attic, grabbed a serial and a PS/2 mouse (Microsoft) and tried to get them to work..no matter what driver I install, I can;t get them working...can;t even get them to recognize, for that matter...Any ideas on what I can try to get these working?

...I have never had these kind of problems getting a stupid mouse to work...tried generic drivers, all the MS serial and ps/2 ones (I think), but to no avail....and I have a paper due in the morning again, and it really sucks tabbing to cut and paste and edit my work and powerpoint junk 🙂

for the record, using a KA7 mb and it seems that Windows isn't detecting the ps/2 or serial port mice...and I am sick of tabbing 🙂
 
Are your serial ports enabled in your BIOS ??. Check that they are not sharing an IRQ. You shouldn't require any drivers to use a MS mouse with 98 or ME. You might have to delete all references to the Explorer mouse before the serial mouse works.
 
I've had a few of these go bad on me, and unfortunately it was the MoBo - had to replace 3 so far for bad mouse ports. Lucky for me they were still under extended warranty (all IBM's).
 
Sounds like you have a dead PS/2 port. Try using the USB port and a USB mouse. I bet you'll get a working mouse. Of course windows will have to install/recognize it, but after it installs drivers for it you should be ok.

I believe the M$ Explorer is an Optical, PS2 or USB mouse (connects either way.)

I have the cheaper version . . . and use it PS/2. Check your device manager to make sure your PS/2 port is AOK with IRQ 12 and no conflicts.

If the PS/2 port has acquired a "hardware problem," then try it in a USB port.

What OS are you running?
 
I've done everything I can except try a another a mouse, or try these mice in another system....Uninstalled ME...BIOS settings were right....took about 8 Mouse KEYS out of the registry...uninstalled and deleted everything...tried all the serial and PS/2 drivers out...etc.etc. The explorer is bad *fer sure* But I find it hard to believe two mice, one PS/2, the other serial, both Microsoft and neither one works 🙂

A couple of suggestion .....Start Windows in Safe mode and go to to controlpanel/system/devicemanager now check to see how many mouse hardware is listed - if more than one than delete all which are not required. Also check if IRQ12 is used only by PS/2 mouse port.
