Serious issues with new build

I just assembled the following system:
amd 3700+ san diego
abit kn8-ultra
xfx 7800gt
WD 160gb SATAII
coolermaster 450w PSU

All components are brand new and retail except for the hard drive which was OEM. I've updated my BIOS to the latest version (13) and also installed the latest chipset drivers.

I am having all kinds of strange problems with the games I'm trying to run. I was able to install FarCry and run it, however no matter which graphics settings I'm on I have large black areas over certain textures, such as a sandy area or the water, etc.

I am uanble to get the Steam part of HL2 to work -- the server is always busy and simply will not decrypt my files (3 days running now). I tried to delete "clientregistry.blob" to no avail (recommended on the steam website). I've installed this game twice on my last gaming machine and didn't have any problems.

I've also downloaded Americas Army twice and right when I start to install it I get a critical error claiming that the .zip file is corrupted.

I'm also experiencing random system reboots - sometimes just during windows and sometimes while trying to play FarCry.

I also bought some fancy mushkin 2-2-2 pc3200 that simply will not run on my machine - it takes several tries to get the machine to even boot, and once it does the graphic display of everything (POST, CMOS, WINDOWS) is completely garbled and I can't make out the screen. I switch back to my Kingston pc2700 and the thing boots just fine. I've also tried both dimm pairs -- 1&2, 3&4 and it made no difference.

I also ran a program called "check-it" on the advice of a guy I know, and the chip+board+kingston memory all pass the tests. I don't know exactly what the testing criteria are, but I find it strange all the same.

Does it sound like I have a faulty motherboard??? The Abit line is supposed to be pretty reliable, but I don't understand how so many things would not work correctly. This is my fifth build and I feel pretty comfortable with what I'm doing, and so I'm at a total loss as to what my problem is. Maybe it's worth mentioning that my copy of WinXP isn't currently "activated" -- apparently they want me to buy a new copy since this is my third personal computer I've installed it on. I can't imagine that would have any effect on the problems I'm experiencing though -- especially the RAM problems at the boot level and so on.

Can anyone throw me a line???

TIA!

I'd say video card way before the MB. XP shouldn't have anything to do with it. I don't read that you updated your graphics driver, have you tried that? Got another card to through in there besides the xfx?

I tried to find an updated driver for the card, but since it's only a few weeks old it apparently shipped with the latest. Unfortunately I don't have another PCI-E card to swap in...LAME! I spent $500 between that card and the motherboard and to have all this doubt just sucks. I guess I could just RMA the both of them, pay the restocking fees, and start over...

It sounds like a memory problem to me. Did you try running memtest86? It could also be the memory slots of the mb.
