i was surfing the web today, when all of the sudden, the screen went completely black, and my computer started beeping rythmically every 5 seconds. it refused to turn off, so i had to hold in the power button 5 seconds to force it to turn off. as soon as i turned it back on, the beeping continued, and still refused to respond or startup. after repeatedly pushing the reset button, it finally started up. what the hell is wrong with my computer?

check your motherboard manual for the beep codes. If you don't have it, make sure everything is seated in your computer. The Vid card, memory, CPU chip. Make sure nothing is loose.

late.

It sounds like overheating to me. Try reseating the memory and video card though. It could be one of those.

dont think its overheating... checked the bios temp after it froze, case temp was 26c, cpu was 44c, also i felt the heatsink and it didnt feel any hotter than normal.. (didnt hurt to touch it)

didnt find the beep codes in the manual, but under the post codes (epox 8k7 has 2 leds that show what the mobo is doing), it says C1 is the auto-detection of onboard dram & cache. this is when it usually freezes during startup. also, the computer froze once during startup when the bios was checking the memory (anyone familiar with award bios - its right after it checks cpu speed on step 2)

the epox website said a continuous beep (which i have) is memory related

is something wrong with my crucial memory?

Only way to tell is to swap it out. You might want to lower your FSB or your CAS timings and see if that helps, too.

If it is the RAM, I'm sure you can get Crucial to replace it.
