Serial Port Speed. Kbps... anyone know?

Need to know what the maximum Kbps transfer rate is for a typical 9 pin serial port.

I've got a little "project" going on.

Hmm... Want to know for sure because I have a Serial to USB adapter that allows Serial devices to run via USB and it brags a 230 Kbps transfer, whic I do know is faster than typical Serial (but I don't know by how much). If that's so, then perhaps it can allow Serial devices to run FASTER than normal because of the improved bandwidth.

I think it only moves at a whopping 7mhz! I could be wrong! A serial is slower than USB and 115kbs might be right. I thought it be even lower than that. Serial ports aren't good for high bandwith devices so don't expect much from them!

You should be able to set this speed under the Device Mangager.

Actually, I just checked on the system I'm on and it goes all the way to 921,600 bps, using Win98SE on a Dell 4100.

Max for a Serial Port is 256K.

It's 115200 bps NOT 256k. Simply refer to the windows system properties. Some systems supported the more uncommon 230400 speed but they are rare. Your USB serial adapter runs at 230400 it seems. However, if your devices don't support 230400, you won't see any benefit from using a 230400 capable serial port.

Umm.... I thought the 115,200 bps was just a bus to port speed setting and not an actual port speed.

Am I wrong?

If so, that would be 114Kbps.

Guess I'll have to take a full loaded Smart Media card, download a bunch of pictures from my camera and time it to see if there's an improvement in performance.
