serial/parallel port powered LCD display

Has anyone tried to make one? as shown in this article gideontech.com , or this one overclockers.com . There is some nice looking software made to control them. It can display: case temps, fan rpms, avalable memory, current winamp song... etc. It does look a little confusing to make, the parts to make one cost around $30, Pcmods has a premade one for $80.

I've made my own. They are cool, but a little bit tricky to wire up. If you don't mind black on green, then I would highly suggest buying a serial LCD instead. I made my own because I didn't like the premade serial LCDs. There also isn't very much software for parallel LCDs. If you make one, then use LCD Smartie. It is also a hassle trying to get them to work in NT/2K/XP because the kernal doesn't want to give you access to the parallel port. I really like how mine turned out, but it did take me a whole day to make, troubleshoot, and get the software to work.
