Serial ATA Raid on ASUS P4C800...Works with 1 Drive?

Does this controller work with a single drive (WD Raptor) in a non raid configuration? I assume so, but I wanted to verify and see if anyone had any trouble with this particular controller.

Yes, I know this, but I'm wondering if this particular controller also works in a non raid setup.

yes raid controllers can work as a regular non raid controller.

maybe next time look in the manual.

Since the motherboard hasn't arrived yet, I didn't think of downloading the manual off of the Asus website.

Maybe next time you won't have an arrogant response. Why must you act like you pay the bills for these forums, as if you think I am trying to waste bandwidth? I asked a question on a public hardware discussion forum and no one forced you to reply; if you can't respond with some sort of decency or respect, don't respond at all.

Which SATA Controller? If you connect it to the ICH5 Controller, there is no need to run in a RAID configuration. Just one drive will do. In fact, the ICH5 Controller is not RAID capable on the P4C800....ASUS took the cheap way out and used the ICH5 instead of the ICH5R.

The Promise SATA Controller you would probably want to run as RAID.

Who pissed in your corn flakes?

That's what's wrong with people today, they have to have everything handed down to them on a silver platter.

When I need info I search for it,getting the manual would have been fast & easy but no you didnt even bother to do that & when I mention it you have a fit!!

You're the one wasting bandwith here.

Dont be mad at me because you were too lazy to look it up.

He doesn't have the manual.

Evidently you pissed in his corn flakes...

He's right, arrogant responses aren't needed. It's a public forum, some of us aren't versed on serial raid and the like. If you can't deal with that, piss off 🙂

Suggesting someone RTFM isn't arrogant at all, it's irrelevant whether the person has to flip through a pile of crap on his desk to find it or go to a web site to find it. Is suggesting that people search or post to the correct forum arrogant? NO ..... it gives them another option and perhaps will help them think of trying that avenue first next time.

jamison If it supports JBOD you may be able to use it with just one disk.

But when was the last time you saw a "wrong forum" post that didn't have a hint of smartassity to it?

You can download the manual off asus's website.

And, when you get the board you'll see, there's two SATA connectors for the PromiseRAID and two from the ICH5. They should be labeled "RAID_1 RAID_2" or something and the other's shouldn't have a label, those are the ones you want to use.

I'd like to hear the answer to this too. FYI Budman, the answer is not explicitly stated in the P4C800/Deluxe manual.

Logically, the RAID controller should work with one drive, yes. A RAID1 is rather pointless if it can't carry on after one drive goes down, and building or re-building a RAID1 should be possible from an existing single drive. The question, of course, is whether you can start off by defining a single drive as a pseudo-RAID1 array consisting of one disk, and just leave it like that. The manual doesn't give any explicit options other than RAID0, RAID1, RAID0+1 and "Multi-RAID," whatever that is (one RAID0 and one RAID1 maybe).

So who's actually done this? 🙂

All the time actually. Usually people make the suggestion so that the person/post in question gets the answer it deserves. Plus being a smartass and being arrogant and very different things.
