Accidently bought one by mistake, so now i'll have to get the pci controller and cables to go with it.

Is this going to be an improvement over my existing drive? thanx!

It really shouldn't be an improvement unless you bought a Raptor or somthin with a higher RPM like 7500 to 10000. The only improvement you will notice would be a possibly cooler system since the SATA drives do not have the fat ribbons, they have small round ones which allows better air circulation.

The only SATA drive that is significantly faster than current IDE drives is the Western Digital Raptor. And that is because of it's speedy 10k rotational speed, and has nothing to do with SATA. Your new SATA drive will be about the same as other current IDE drives. it may be slightly faster, simply due to it being newer, with better platters and the like.

Theres not realy any difference between it and ATA. I bough SATA for a system i was building recently just because the drives were about only $10 more then the ATA ones and having the smaller cables is a nice plus :)

SATA doesnt really improve anything since no hd is available can utilize its fatter bus. heck even ata133 has no improvement over ata100 either unless u raid 4 drives.

rpms on the other hand, does improve a great bit of speed.

The smaller cable is pretty nice since you wont have fat ide cables that blocks airflow anymre.
