Seems like the media spin machine is in full tilt mode regarding the automatic spending cuts that will be kicking in.... $86 billion.

One would think the world will collapse. Story after story concerns stuff like the TSA cuts slowing travel to a crawl, hundreds of thousands of civilian lay offs in the DoD, parks closing, etc. etc.

In reality these cuts are bringing the budget back to 2011 levels. Not really a period of mass layoffs or missing TSA personnel.

Listening to a local talk radio show here in Nashville I heard a good idea. The feds spend $8000 per student aid package in college aid. This is $175 billion per year. Just cut that in half and be done with it. How many people need a degree in ancient latin drawing technology anyway. Of course if this happened there would not be enough reason to get political points from the obama blame game.

This political posturing is growing very tiresome.

Here in Hawaii, the primary contractor for shipyard jobs at Pearl is telling its subcontractors that layoffs are imminent, furloughs are already being handed out of which affects thousands of jobs; and that's just at Pearl Harbor. The other military bases in Hawaii are seeing/planning for similar cutbacks. Mortgages are going to be unpaid, foreclosures will rise, and for those workers who live paycheck to paycheck and pay rent while they scrimp and save to get out of that cash draining loop, they are going to be living out of their cars or already are.

It's real. For thousands of workers both in the public and private sector here in Hawaii, it's real.

The very rich? They've insulated themselves quite well against the looming sequestration, so to them, this whole deal is much ado about nothing other than having the income gap between themselves and the middle class/poor grow ever larger, which is something the very rich prefer anyway.

This is beyond moronic. This is something like the nineth fiscal cliff type crisis Congress has caused since the GOP took control of the House in 2010. And again, this is self-imposed and entirely preventable/avoidable. Both sides acknowledge the results will be diasterous, but noone even suggests the most reasonable solution-repeal sequestration.

This is what happens when the government tries to support the economy through tax and spend.

Let the spending cuts go into place, then the people will see how bad the economy truly is.

IDK of anyone who would miss a TSA agent. Goodbye and good riddance.

For all the civilians on my base: sequestration = furloughs = we all lose 1/5th of our pay.

Yep...we're currently living in a "Navy town." Lots of folks here will be hurting from this.

OP: agree 100%. The left wing media is in full hype mode trying to blame the gop for the spending habits of the dems and obummer. Just like a school district that threatens to cut popular things like sports and bus routes if the residents don't give in to their demands for more money to waste.

If you watch the news and most of the left wing (ie, main stream) media, you'd think cutting $5 from the bloated spending budget would mean the end of the world.

I like it because it would be 90% cuts would be ones that the Republicons would hate and also in recent polling the Republicans will own the fallout of millions losing their jobs because of their inaction.

Case in point, the HOR is on vacation right now as this yet another prefabricated crisis is bearing down on us.

Yes rabid Rightists in here...you WILL own it.

Also in this link a MAJORITY of Americans favor a balanced approach of more revenue and cuts.

Send a Xmas card to house Republicans.

Why? defense sequestration was obama's plan to get the Republicans to the bargaining table. However despite the Republicans calling him on it... the obama spin machine is able to take people like you and make you want to go out and purchase some more shares of obama stock.

What about the 174 Republicans who voted for this Sequester to happen? Did Obama hold a gun to their heads?

This whole doom and gloom is rather pathetic at this point.

Yeah 100 billion less in spending increases over 8 years will utterly destroy the defense industry.

Taking the right approach and making the correct choices isn't always popular or appreciated. Glad to see at least one party willing to do the things that need done, even if it hurts them politically.

Gotta hand it to the leftists though. They've done a phenomenal job of twisting pretzel logic, using the media to push the idea that somehow it makes sense to blame republicans for democrat spending.

Did those 174 republicans push through some legislation overriding obummer's veto? Did they have a supermajority in the house or senate to force this through? No, it was the libs. Unfortunately for the country, the leftist spin machine will blame the usual lib failure on those who don't control congress or the white house.

Well you have to hand it to the Republicons, cutting your EARNED benefits as opposed to asking the 1% and fat cat Corporations to pony up more is really popular with the American public. It seems to be a hit with the fringe in here tho....:whiste::p Hence the Black dude is still in the White House with an even higher approval rating then before his 2nd term ingauration. You really can't say the same about Congressional Republicons tho....LMFAO!

In the mind of tax & spend liberal, a reduction in the increase (ie, you're still increasing spending, but just increasing it by less) is a draconian crushing blow to the country.

hahaha. If you'd put down the obummer koolaid for even just a moment, you'd realize that increasing taxes on the 1% -- even if you increased them by 100% -- would not have any meaningful impact on the numbers we're talking about. It's completely irrelevant, other than to rile of the group of useful idiots into supporting the cause.

I agree. But Republicans are on this as well when it comes to their golden goose the defense industry.

Umm do you realize that raising the Capital gains rates would be the HIGHEST revenue generator?

Oh absolutely, they're not absolved in this mess at all. It's just funny yet irritating at the same time to see the leftist media go all out with their doom and gloom predictions and blaming the gop. And to think, there are still idiots who don't realize the media is for the most part an extension of a political party nowadays. Fox is the gop media arm, the rest are democrat outlets.
