Unfortunately, it was just (yet) another example of shoddy Boeing design and manufacturing practices.

Arcing in centre wing fuel tank, ullage is a very volatile mixture of fuel vapours and air - and the spark made it go bang.

Hence, as Zorba points out, all the flammability exposure reduction work done since (at enormous cost!).

I don't think they ever pinpointed the source of the arc, so you can't say it was poor design from Boeing. Especially when Airbus has also had to roll out a massive amount of redesigns and maintenance changes.

It was an old plane, operated by a going broke airline, and until the EZAP and EWIZ regulations came out in ~2008 wiring was really maintained poorly.

So tell me, if it was a Missile. Why has the FAA made airlines spend literally billions of dollars modifying all commercial aircraft per SFAR 88? Why has every other country in the world followed this direction, including on Airbus aircraft?

Also why would the Navy been testing anti air missiles in the busiest airspace in the world as opposed to any of their numerous, huge, and remote weapon testing areas?

Like nearly all conspiracy theories, this one has never made sense and this lawsuit is going no where. But I'm glad he got a bunch of "I'm a pilot and I know..." And "I was in the Navy and I know..." Emails.
Get out of here with your logical and well reasoned comments. You're ruining a perfectly good conspiracy theory.

That was one press conference I wish I didn't have to go to. Being woken up around 4 AM, then told to cover an airline crash. I told my editor unless a dignitary or major famous person was on board, it was just a passenger jet crash.

But he insisted. Half asleep on the cab ride out to East Moriches, Long Island. The long wait for the presser to start. Then guessing what time to get out of my chair and dash to a pay phone to call in and dictate a news story.

And it turned out to be ... a passenger jet crash. Yeah, there was an explosion and 230 souls were lost. But I never thought a missile downed the aircraft. The entire incident is sad and tragic.
