i always hear about this but really my opinion is if your site has proper metatags and is properly indexed how can registering tons of similar domains help you get more hits?

ok so this is a crappy strategy. confirmed.

UPDATE:

what then do you guys recommend as good practices?

I am not sure what you are asking, are you talking about registering the same name in multiple TLDs? It doesn't provide an SEO benefit but it can be helpful in terms of organizing your site. For example the .org of google is devoted to their charitable works. Metatags are virtually worthless nowadays in terms of SEO, quality content and backlinks are where it's at.

im not exactly sure, i overheard two guys at lunch yesterday talking about how they are planning for a more aggressive SEO strategy by investing in a lot of domain registrations that are similar to their own, their business area and so on...

My guess is from that snippet of conversation then they are just buying keyword rich domains in their niche, particularly previously developed ones that have been dropped and redirecting them to their page.

i see... cause i mean buying other domains like if my company was called "google" and i went off and bought "gooogle" or "googlee" that would just be silly right

If you are a company as big as google buying typo versions of your domain is a very good idea, and they have do just that. For your average company or individual though buying anything beyond obvious typos for your domain isn't financially practical.

metatags aren't important anymore (other than the meta description, which is displayed in google serps)

most domain buyers are buying domains which have recently expired. these domains already have a positive pagerank and a positive age (which means the domain is typically out of the google sandbox)
parking the domain onto another domain transferrs the link juice from that domain as well as the positive PR points
its also spammy, and will likely get the original domain banned or at least punished

not a good SEO strategy in my opinion...at least not long term
and unless you're selling beanie babies or webkinz (something that won't be popular forever), long term strategies are always better

The best practice for getting a good pagerank really is good content and lots of backlinks. Links from forums help get it noticed by google but eventually you'll want quality links from popular sites and blogs.

Quality content and backlinks are the most important things. Having a site map, proper use of title tags and good inner linking on your website is also important. In terms of getting backlinks there are variety of methods available like directory submission, dofollow blog commenting, purchasing links from relevant sites, forum posting, linkbait, social bookmarking, the list goes on and on. Some of these methods are more effective than others and which ones you choose depend somewhat on the content of your site.

So far in my experience, the site content largely affects the search popularity. So there is a big difference, there are people looking for information and there are people looking for a particular site- both using search engine. Due to this, if your site is new you have to first market it- Godaddy and Google Marketing really works, other methods involve radio announcements, affiliation, word of mouth, t-shirts, press releases etc. You have to do your best so that everyone knows your site exists, only then the next part comes- it is called "optimization". You can optimize the search results by adding long descriptive titles that highlights the page content (ex: pscode.com), don't use html Tables- use CSS Tables instead. Make sure the content is fairly big and less graphical (ex: wikipedia).

And finally, there are a ton of things to learn about SEO- I recommend getting SEO Tutorial from lynda.com http://movielibrary.lynda.com/...modListing.asp?sid=206

Also most modern search engines take into account the context of the text. This means they give more weight to text surrounded by <h1> and <h2> tags. Don't try to trick it by surrounding your whole body in the tags though, these engines are pretty smart. But definitely make sure each page has a relevant heading with <h1> tags and relevant subheading with important keywords using <h2> tags.

title tags are #1 priority
inbound links with relevant linking text are #2 priority

using the right h tags and bolding and such is also important, but design your site for the user - not the search engine
don't try to trick the engine 🙂

i don't believe in a benefit of css over tables. (unless you're stuffing IDs with relevant keywords)

oh, keyword expansion is huge
decide on a target market (or markets)
make a list of keywords, then expand them

i use trellian keyword discovery - i've found it to be the most accurate in comparison with my own sites traffic
figure out what keyphrases are getting searched the most and then look at the sites that are ranking high for those phrases. figure out what they're doing and what they're NOT doing...you can usually find some kephrases that are easy targets because no one has really optimized their site for them

think LONG TAIL. long tail traffic is less, but has a higher conversion rate (assuming that your site has relevant content)

Thanks guys! excellent. I have got to say, you guys are got a lot of good information for people to come and look.
well thanks for having this one, i learn something new..
