I ordered an MSI Pro2A and Duron 700 combo from Monarch Computers. They had as good a price as anyone with reasonable shipping, and it was retail boxed. I am very happy with it. Picked up a case at a local computer store with a 300W PS.

hello scottyb, i rember telling you that we could build you a much beter computer for small fortune you were giving to gatway, i see your ready now:) just go to pricewatch to get an eye for the prices.
as for a motherboard, get one of the new kt133a boards for the overclocking potential, espesialy if you have crucial ram. there are only 3 out right now so not much choice there, though i recomend the abit kt7a-raid for about $150. that brings me to my next point if you want to spend some money as you mentioned in the last post, get raid, the speed is realy nice.
the t-bird should cost ya about $300.
a mans case is a presonal thing shop around on pricewatch a bit and find one that looks nice for your, at least 2 fan mounts and a amd aproved powersuply are the only real musts, easy to work with features and quality construction are nice to have, elan vital and super-micro are some of my favorates but its easy to spend as little as $50 on a case.
you might want to compare a geforce card closely with radion ddr for $120 before you throw you money out on a new card, or beter yet just by a radion and sell it off if you realy think you nead a faster card that doenst look as good but costs a lot more.
as for dvd, many good ones out there find the best for about $100 and windows me can be had for about the same.
you'll find a pair of imb deskstars for &300 to work well together in raid and give you more than enough storage, probably a sound blaster 5.1 $80 with some nice speakers; klipsh, altec-lancing, or cambrage for well less than $200. might as well spring for a 3com or other nice nec for about $80. and your choice ofof your choice a mouse $40, flopy $20, keyboard $30, leveing you over $1000 to spend on the monitor and still spend under the price of the gateway. granted yopu may still want to figure in the price of ram, mebey a cdrw and a printer, ms office200 or whatever, but that still leaves you with more than enough for a nice 19in:)

Nah, you'd be better off spec'ing out a machine with custom parts and having someone else build it for you. It might be even cheaper (they get wholesale, and there's no shipping cost) and you get a warranty. And the best part is there is no headache of building it yourself.

If you go to a good reputable builder they should be able to find everything you want, except for maybe the heatsink.

And oh yeah, OEM is better in the case of the CPU, because then you don't have to pay for the crapola heatsink/fan. Also you can get the MUCH cheaper OEM OS. I'd stay away from Windows ME and go with 2000 if you can swing it.

If you use pricewatch use

also. Stay away from anybody to low. Although the higher rated companies usually charge more. I try to never go below a 4. These two really compliment each other. Do lots of studying and research. Look at the specs on my sys in me sig. I just built this in December. MB looks really obsolete but this thing is fast and stable as a brick. But even now I might try an abit sa6r or the new kt7a raid with the new 133a chipset for an amd. Do not sacrifice stability at any point. Just ain't worth it. As far as a case look for the new antec sx1040. Great keeper case. PS good enough for any athlon so far. Cheap cases don't make sense. In the computer industry as no other you get what you pay for. Just look for low prices and good companies. And there seems to be a new group of businesses that offer free shipping (like onvia use to.) Free shipping often makes a deal. You can also try pricescan. good luck you'll need it if you don't do your research. HTH
