I don't really care about the "I know you're not at your desk" argument, but when I see that line it says to me "this idiot doesn't know how to turn the signature off, or worse, he doesn't know it looks stupid"

Exactly how I feel.

I set it for that same reason, it lets people know why my response if shorter than normal and may contain minor errors.

Agreed - emails from my phone tend to be shorter. Also - since I typically only use it outside of normal business hours to respond to emails it shows what a hard and dedicated worker I am!

Meh it's free advertisement and I don't think the point of smart phones is that you can reply to e-mails and it's transparent to other people that you're doing it from a phone.

i thought it was to tell everyone they had an iphone

Combination vanity and advertising.

Though maybe it won't always work out so well.

This is also one of my gripes about mobile phones. We pay an arm and a leg for the things, then we have to be blasted with ads all over the place. Gaaahhh, so frustrating.

Sent from Thinkpad Running Microsoft Windows Professional 64-bit with several VMs running various flavors of Windows and Linux.
Or buy a new car and the dealership slaps their logo on it and installs a license plate border featuring their name.
If I'm doing advertising, I want a check every month.

AFAIK every phone I have seen this on, it's just the signature line. You can blank it out or change it to whatever you want.

I am a deadbeat, so I have one of those ghetto pay-as-you-go phones. I updated mine to say I really have an iPhone. I am baller like that.

When I see that someone has that, I read it as that person is technology inept.

There are practical business reasons for having a signature a la 'sent from my x phone'. Granted removing the advertising part is key. I basically leave the signature (variant) in there as a way for people to know I'm not at my desk. Don't waste your time looking for me because I'm probably in a meeting or out of the office.

So people know you are not in your office and an excuse to give a brief response.
Pretty straightforward reasoning.

When I had the iPhone you could just delete the line after it added it to the bottom of your email. It was still annoying though.

You can also change it or disable it. But the reason this stuff exists is to explain mistakes and excessive brevity in the e-mail.

In this day and age, if people assume because you sent an email that you are at your desk, still fall under the same category I previously described.

I kind of feel the same way about those who suck at spelling and grammar. But only because we're in this "day in age".

Its all about advertising.

Ditto names and features on the backs of cars. People spend all day looking at your rear, not your front. Putting not only the name but also features and the local dealership is free advertising, and I bet it works well too. They didnt do that in the 50's. And having grown up in the 80's I've seen it get worse and worse. I'm surprised they dont put expected fuel economy back there too.

As for me, when I had my truck painted I told them to take off all emblems in addition to the stickers (obviously the stickers had to come off anyway) and when they were done I told them to NOT put anything back on. The GM corporation is not getting any freakin help from me, not without paying.
Especially when I aint too thrilled with their vehicles anyways.

Came pre-programmed in my Palm Pre phone but you had the ability to go into settings and change it, which I promptly did. Now if I only get the font exact it would be seamless.

I think it's stupid, advertising for the company and people are too stupid to disable it.

Ya man, those typos are serious business.

You should use quotations more, those, along with your phone email signature will take you places.

It's just a single line. I do understand hating dealer emblems on cars, for example, but I don't see the reason to whine about this. You can easily remove this "feature", too.
