Sennheiser HD555 or HD595

I currently own a pair of Sennheiser HD497 headphones and have had them for almost 6 years now. They are starting to fall apart and recently I have been considering some new headphones. I'm torn between the HD555 or the HD595 and I am hopping to find someone on this board who is familiar with these models, and also whether or not it will be a worthwhile upgrade.

My listening environment is just a standard room with some ambient street noise, but open cans are still preferred due to their sound stage. I have an X-fi xtreme audio (the real X-fi one, not the rebadged audigy 4) and use winamp with ASIO output plugins to play 24/96 Flac vinyl rips along with a lot of well made mp3 rips of my own CD collection. High definition audio is becoming a passion of mine. My headphones are not connected to an amp, which concerns me for the HD595 since I have read an amp would not be a bad idea with those cans.

Hopefully some audio guys can weigh in. Thanks!

You can buy replacement ear pads and a cable for the HD497. Just a thought, I don't know how bad off yours are.

I like the Sennheiser 555 HD headphone. They are and open ear style. Very comfortable. I wear glasses and I haven't had any problems with them pushing the frames of my glasses into the side of my head. It takes about 100 hours before they really break in. I use them for gaming and listening to music. For the price, their hard to beat.

I have 595s.

They are excellent. However, I am not sure they are a huge upgrade from the 555s. I am happy with mine, but I suspect I would also be happy with 555s.

Neither one really needs an amp, if you go up to the 650 level, you probably need an amp, and its a whole different ballgame.

I have the 555s and they're really quite good. I'm driving from the same sound card as you are. Did you end up purchasing them? How are you finding them compared to your old headphones?

Grab the asus xonar card with the built in headphone amp. I use it with some pc 350's. Sounds *AMAZING*.
