I have both the HD555's and HD280's. I prefer the sound of the HD555's, perhaps because they're open. The "soung stage" on the 555's are much much better than the 280's. And music in general just sounds a lot better on the 555's, not to mention they're quite a bit more comfortable. I like the cord too, it's a 10 foot, non-coiled cord. Where the 280's is about 10 feet as well, but it's all coiled up.

Also, the HD280's are good if you're going to be in a noisy environment, they block out external noises very well, specially with music playing. But if you're going to be using these headphones the majority of the time when there's not other people or things making noise in the background, then I would recommend the 555's.

I have both pairs as well, and I like the HD555's much MUCH better. That being said, if you are listening in a loud environment or don't want to disturb those around you, the 280's can't be beat.

Dont these need an amp in order to perform to their full extent?

after looking at the graph on headphone.com they are 175+ ohms depending upon freq. that is HUGE and i can guarentee they should be used with a headphone amplifier. Just FYI.

The old HD555's were 120 ohm, the new ones (the ones I have, and probably these as well) are 50 ohms, so should be fine (mine are) to run off your computer etc. Though a headphone amp will make them sound a good bit better anyway according to audiophiles.

interesting, did not know that, those are less resistant than the 280's (64ohm)

dam i want those, and i just go the 280's about 2 weeks ago and they sound great now. but man those look very tempting. must resist! i spent a lot of money on christmas already. i hate seeing stuff i want on this forum , makes me want to pick it up by just looking at the picture.

According to PCMall, the HD280's wont be back in stock until Febuary 15th! I might be canceling my order and getting these instead. I cant decide. I wanted the HD280's for work so that I dont bother others.

Grados are generally considered better for rock, but for all-around listening HD555 is very hard to beat @ $120, BUT it's not hard to find 'em around $120 delivered coughfrooglecough.

I got in on an amazon for $97 or something just before Christmas. These are very nice headphones and I've enjoyed listening to them, especially as my Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1's are out of service since we're remodeling our computer room.
