Sennheiser HD580 Back in stock @ 132 shipped

NOTE: These are great cans, but are open (others around you can hear what you hear so not for the bus or library) and have very high impedence (300 OHM so an amp is stronly recommended. These will not be driven properly by integrated sound on your computer.

Other than that IMHO these are the best cans currently under $150.00

Enjoy.

EDIT: Back in stock at shipdog

EDIT: they seem sold out but ecost has them for $134.00 shipped.

HD 580 @ ECOST $134.00 shipped

Nice price. How's their resellerratings?

If its good, then yeah, these would be nice. I think I would personally spring for the 595s over them (even with the added cost) but thats me, and I haven't actually compared the sound of the two (perfectly content with un-amped 555s...for now 😀 ).

These sound great regardless, but you really need an amp to bring out their sound. Also not a bad buy if you've got an X-Fi, since evidently that card's pro-ish quality components really make headphones shine. Still doesn't change the fact that putting even an entry-level good amp (re: not something that uses batteries) will make these sound amazing.

Also, I don't have the site bookmarked anymore, but every single component in the 580s is replaceable - even the elements (though IIRC, I think they're 80 bucks apiece).

595s have a more forward sound, while 580s are more of the 600/650 sound, which is more laid back

Yeah, thats what I found out when researching headphones. For me, I think that would sound better, although, I really don't know for sure since I haven't compared the two. I thought about just going full out and getting the 595s or even 600s right off the bat, but figured since I was new to the quality headphone market, that I'd start lower down and work my way up, so that I could at least be able to see the difference (or rather hear the difference).

I initially had the 280s for their closed design, thinking I would need them in my apartment, and while that aspect was nice, I picked up the 555s in the FS/T forum and compared the two and felt that there was a noticable difference in sound quality and so sold the 280s since the closed design didn't turn out to be as necessary as I expected. The difference was probably exacerbated by me not having an amp, but I think I'll hold off on an amp until I sometime maybe eventually move up to the higher end ones.

To be honest, and while its quite absurd considering you buy headphones for their sound quality, but I much prefer the appearance of the 595s over the 580/600 ones, and so for me that was another reason I think I might prefer them.

I have both the 580's and 650s along with several other good cans. I find the 580's to be better than the 595 if the 580's are amped. The 595 doesn't require an amp, but doesn't have the headroom that the 580s have when amped. Also if I was going for the HD595 I would look at Beyer Dynamics DT770 or DT990 before the HD595.

For 130 the HD580s are a great set of cans, but remember they have a heftty ohm rating so you need to make sure you have a soundcard with sufficient power, or purchase an amp with the savings!

you could always make an amp or buy one like a CMoy. I could probably sell one 🙂

Nice info. As you can tell and I already said, I'm new to the scene, so its always good to have people with actual experience weigh in. Thats what makes AT such a great community is the helpful info.

I own a pair of Senn 600s and have been using them for a couple of years. Get these, and spend $50-100 on an adequate headphone amp (there are lots of people that home build good ones-check the forums at Head-Fi and you will have an awesome audio system for only a few bucks.

lol...don't go to headfi....or your wallet will be sorry..really sorry...."that few bucks" can turn in few $k pretty easily... 😀

Can these be driven sufficiently from the headphone output on a receiver? My PC's hooked up to a Sherwood 8090R 5.1 Receiver, and I don't know how the outputs on your average receiver compare with a dedicated headphone amp. I think I'll spring for these if it'll drive them ok.

Yes, that'll work. Later you can buy a headphone amp. You'll notice the difference.

I should have added they can be driven quite successfully from higher output sources even without an amp such a the new x-fi line of audigy cards for your home theater reciever. In general though you still need an amp to get the very best out of your cans, but they should shine the in environment you have described.
