If I plug these into the front headphone jack of my Yamaha RX-V765 reciever, will I still need or benefit from a separate headphone amp?

they defintely don't need one but not sure if they might sound even better.

In general headphone jacks on most receivers are an afterthought. They will allow you to use headphones, but the quality will be bad, you will get a lot of background noises, hissing, crackling, etc. Of course YMMV, but this is true most of the time. You can try to see for yourself, but chances are you'll get better sound plugging these headphones straight into the source if you can.

I love the 555's. I like open ear headphones so I can actually hear a phone call/doorbell. I also prefer the fabric as they keep my ears cool to the point you dont know you have on headphones.

I just ordered another set.

keep in mind these are authorized and will carry a warranty, though.

ebay and electronics outlets acquire their stuff through a middleman and typically can't offer a warranty. if that matters to you.

hd555/595's should sound fine without amping. they don't require it badly like higher end sennheisers(hd580/600/650).

hd280's are very different sounding from hd555's.
with out even getting into sound signatures, one is closed and one is open.
