Sennheiser HD 280Pro for $74 and free shipping @ Newegg

great cans... got some for one of the kids for his birthday, he loves not being able to hear his mom screaming at him... don't need to turn it up so loud since they block outside noise quite well...

How drastic is the sound quality difference coming from a typical set of mid/high-end PC speakers (Logitech, Klipsch) when running without a headphone amp (Audigy 2 ZS)?

The HD280 pro probably aren't worth buying if you don't listen to music with subtle details; jazz or classical for instance. With the headphones I can clearly hear quieter instruments like harps that are difficult to hear from my speakers. On the other hand, Dark Side of the Moon would sound awesome I bet! I have the sudden urge to borrow my Dad's copy.

my musical kid likes his old klipsch 4.1's better than these headphones, but he says it's mostly because he gets a bigger feel from symphonic kinds of stuff... he says as far as headphones go he likes them better than any others he's tried (but he hasn't tried any super de duper ones)... this is with an xfi...

they totally kill my logitech 4.1's... and that's through the onboard of a nvidia 650 or 750...

the hd280's are mid-fi and are ok if you need isolating/closed headphones at the <$75 range. another option would be the sony v6/7506.

the hd280's sometimes have a problem with the headband cracking/breaking.

only had them since first of last decemberr, can't speak to durability... but that's y i buy with my amex to get lots of warranty...

the hd580's were discontinued a few years back. the current equivalent would be the hd600's which share the same drivers and sound but with a "marble-like" finish.

I have hd280s, about 3 years old, and they have cracked, but I'm pretty rough on them and wear them most of the day, 5 days a week at work. Comfortable, great sound without an amp, and fairly durable.

When they cracked, they got marginally looser on my huge head, but are still quite comfortable.

cliffs: I'd totally buy these again, especially at this price.

You are wrong, they make a big difference in both games a rock music compared to a mid range set!!!

Guys these are very nice and a still at this price.

Decent cans for a closed design. Open-air will get you much better sound quality, but obviously not very private. These are oversized for mobile use anyway. For that purpose I'd go with Etymotic ER-6i. For open air at a comparable price I like Grado SR-80s -- they sound leagues better. And yes, I've owned all 3. The big problem I had with the Senns was that the headband was too tight and gave me a headache after a while. My cap size is 7 3/8.

I've had these cans for at least 4 years now and I am very happy with them. I think they were about $150 when I bought them.

Agreed, man these things are tight, really uncomfortable, and I don't even have a big head. I'd try them out before you buy, if you can.

Worth the upgrade from HD212Pros that work fine?
I did that exact upgrade path. I did give my 212s one serious beating though- the earcups come off QUITE easily now, and they're all scuffed up. It doesn't look like the 280s will be able to handle that, so they've been designated as home headphones.

The most obvious difference- the 212s have way more bass kick than the 280s- apparently the 212s were set up with a "Bass boost" of sorts, so it's a bit more difficult to hear the bass, kick drum, etc. on the 280s. The 280s are apparently designed to have a (mostly) flat frequency response, which is the reason for this.

The sound quality to my ears is otherwise really similar- You do hear some more mid-high details that disappear on the 212s, and the highs are more crisp. The cable on the 280s is also one of those annoying curly ones, and it's on the left ear. I have things set up to plug in on the right, in general, so that's a bit annoying.

I got mine only because of a few free gift cards from Guitar Center, and it cost me 30 in the end. Would I have paid the full $99 or even the $75 bucks to upgrade? Probably not- the 212s do the job quite well.

the grados are supra-aural, they sit on top of the ears instead of going around them.

most on head-fi would certainly rate the sr60's above the hd280's in sound quality, grados are especially good for guitar and rock. but remember they're open and offer no sound isolation and they leak. so not good for quiet environments.

just got my pair today. Trying them out as I type. They are more comfortable than I thought they would be. My buddy has a pair of grado sr80's here at work and the grados definitely sound better. The bass on the grados are deeper and the hd 280 are a tiny bit lacking in the lows. My budddy says they they need to be "broken in" for the bass to really come out. Not sure if this is true or not. Very crisp sounding and you can hear tons of detail. if you want to isolate sound these are the ones to get. Over all I am happy with my purchase. Well see how they do in my gaming rig.

gives some freq response graphs
