Hey guys,
A little background first. At my high school, to graduate, we have to do a senior project, which involves a paper and an actual project. Basically you have to choose a topic and then write about it and then do something that is "loosely" related to that topic. My friend wants to do her senior paper on either endangered sea turtles or dolphin communication. However, she is having some problems choosing a senior project that relates to this. Money of course is a problem, as we are high school seniors. She was going to get SCUBA certification, but that's too expensive. $100 is the limit. My idea is she should learn how to waterski, but I don't know how much that costs. Or she could go volunteer at this salmon place we have around here. Or she can drive somewhere to go volunteer with some water animals, but it's too far. Or she can learn how to fish, but she does not believe in killing fish. So any ideas would be helpful.

Cliffs:
Senior Project - friend having a hard time choosing a project
Paper is on either endangered sea turtles or dolphin communication
Project should be related to water...loosely...

Any ideas would be helpful...

Is there a zoo or aquarium in your city? Maybe something related to that would be more appropriate than learning how to water ski.

What's the point of it? Is it supposed to be educational? Why does it have to be related to water? For example, would doing something relating to language (like sign language or something) work for being related to the "Dolphin Communication" paper?

The point of the senior project? It does not have to be related to water, but she likes water so I just thought she would like that. You could definitely do something like that. Any other ideas?

I was about to say something dealing with communication but that has already been mentioned. Surely you guys have a zoo nearby that she could volunteer at for a day or two.

Where do you live? There are a few college labs that work with marine animal communication, and I'm sure the gas money would cost less than $100.

Northern California. She would want to, but she would have to be 18 to actually work at the Marine Center at Monterey Bay.

Have a 'Free Willy' movie marathon with her friends and family? Get a job at the local Red Lobster?

Seriously though, she can't even volunteer at the Marine Center? Not work - volunteer. I don't see how they wouldn't let her volunteer for a day or two. Or instead of volunteering, she could contact Public Relations at the Marine Center and see if they could take her on a guided tour of the center.

Oh, if she doesn't believe in catching fish to kill why would she want to volunteer at a salmon farm?

It has to be a challenge. I don't think having a movie marathon or working at a Red Lobster counts as a challenge.

She is an animal person so she wants to actually work with the animals. Hey I don't make the rules.

That was the funny part. I didn't think she would want to volunteer at a salmon farm.

man no offence, but your senior project sounds like a walk in the park. We had to have at least 25 hours for an A, with every second of it documented with pictures, film, and writing. uhg that sucked. but i now have an awesome home theater.

what about volunteering at the local SPCA or animal shelter? my ex-girlfriend (god d@m her soul) did that as part of her biology major requirement.

Oh, my senior project is really easy. I am going to create a podcast. And we all should know how easy that is.

She loves the water, she wants to be a marine biologist. So working with water animals is something she really wants to do. I told her she should fly to Australia and visit the Great Barrier Reef, but she said way too much money involved.
