Send back those darn Compuserve / AOL CD-ROMs!

Tweakers.Net came up with The Brilliant Plan to send back te compuserve CD-ROMs!
If this article is placed on Slashdot / AndandTech etc... our action will really make impact! Boycot Compuserve / AOL spammings!
I'll roughly translate the T.net story, since their servers will probaly crash if they get slashdotted again...

Voor diegene die het nog niet was opgevallen: CompuServe is weer begonnen met haar wervingsoffensief. Om maar zoveel mogelijk nieuwe abonnees te werven, wordt er weer met CD's gestrooid alsof het niets kost. Van c?t tot Veronicagids, van Libelle (echt waar) tot VT Wonen; overal stopten ze die dingen erbij. In 1999 zijn we, nadat onze muren helemaal volgehangen zijn met CS-CD's, een actie gestart: Retourneer uw CompuServe CD's!
Die actie had succes; ongeveer 5000 CD?s gingen, samen met de actiebrief, retour afzender via het antwoordnummer. Daarna was het een tijdje opvallend stil, en we dachten dat we er vanaf waren.

Helaas, niets bleek minder waar, aangezien ik zelf de afgelopen twee weken al een stuk of tien exemplaren ontving bij diverse (computer)bladen . Ik ben niet de enige, zoals je kunt lezen op het forum is CompuServe weer met een bombardement aan CD's gestart. Al die CD's zijn een verspilling van geld en grondstoffen. Immers; er is papier en karton bedrukt; de CD's bevatten kunststof, zilver en verf en het versturen kost bakken met geld. Nou kan je over dat laatste een discussie houden over wat wij daar nou aan hebben; feit is wel dat dit geld beter aan een goede helldesk, lagere abonnementsprijzen of capaciteitsvergroting kan worden besteed. Daarnaast zijn de meeste bezoekers al uitermate tevreden met hun huidige ISP. Met andere woorden; het wordt tijd voor CompuServe actie 2.0!

Wat is het plan?
Simpel; we sturen zoveel mogelijk CD's terug, samen met een briefje over het hoe en waarom van de actie. De CD's kunnen kosteloos naar CompuServe teruggestuurd worden dankzij het antwoordnummer.

Wat wel en wat niet?
Dat laten we een beetje aan jou over, maar het lijkt ons wel handig om de CD onklaar te maken, om te voorkomen dat we ze net zo hard weer terugkrijgen in een volgende campagne. Het schijnt dat schuursponsjes een uitstekend effect hebben, maar ook domweg doormiddenbreken is een optie . (kijk wel uit voor eventuele splinters; Tweakers.net is niet verantwoordelijk voor enig letsel veroorzaakt door het modificeren van de CD's). Stuur er zoveel mogelijk apart: leuk voor de stapel en elke brief kost ze geld. Het sturen van andere CD's dan die van CompuServe is niet gewenst; die hebben niks met het bedrijf te maken. De brief voorzien van je naam is ook niet handig, tenzij je ze persoonlijk weer terug wilt krijgen .

Die brief; waar is dat ding?
Die staat hier in RTF-formaat, dus iedereen zou hem moeten kunnen lezen.

En wanneer gaat het gebeuren?
Het effect is het grootst als we de CD's met z'n allen tegelijk versturen, daarnaast heeft de PTT dan ook weer wat te doen . 16 februari lijkt me een mooie datum om ze op de bus te doen; maandag de 19e krijgt Compuserve ze dan (hopelijk) met postzakken tegelijk binnen .

Every magazine out there these days is supplied with one of those irritatig Compuserve / AOL CD-ROM's. (And I really mean EVERY... even gurls magazines!!)
In 1999 we started our first action against this aggressive form of spamming. The capaign at first succeeded, but some while ago, I received numerous CD's from Compuserver ... again...
All those CD's are a waste of material and bad for our environment. They send use carton with printings, and the CD's contain plastics; and yet they send them per thousand ... what a waste of money.
So, you could argue about this, but for a fact: they could better invest the money in their helpdesk services. PLUS, your member fee won't get any lower this way...
And ofcourse, most people are already satisfied with their current ISP.
It's time for the CompuServe Capaign 2.0!

: Plan de Campagne
Simpel, we send as much CD's as we can at a specified date, including a letter explaining our action. You can send the CD's for free (probably, dunno about the states) to their office in the netherlands (info below, maybe you'd need to find an address in the US of A so that it will be free, dunno...).

: Do's & Don'ts
We pretty much leave that to you, but we do thinks it's handy to demolish your cd's a bit, so they won't send it back right away... (I personnally was interested in the idea of glueing it to a brick, but some others concluded that it would take to much effort.) Het seems that some scratches with anything you can think of will do, but braking it would probably be more effective. Watch out with splinters though. (Tweakers.net cannot be held responsible for any damage done by demolishing CD's for this campaign!)
Oh, and send every CD in a seperate enveloppe (re-use some old ones), it will cost them more money. DONT put your name on it, unless you want to get it back...

Suit yourself, but my hat's off to AOL's marketing coup. I don't consider it as loathsome as e-mail spam, because they are actually out of pocket a little money to get me that disc. Keeps the Postal Service going and puts money in the pocket of whoever prints that stuff up. And hey, I get free cases for my bulk CDR media!

Come back when you have a solution to get back at these e-mail spammers. I guarantee you'll have a sympathetic ear for that!

I think they are great. I use them at work to fight boredom. Right now I am trying to get the surface writing scrapes off one without damaging the data itself.

What are you people nuts? I've been ordering them from AOL when ever I get the chance.



I've been using those DVD like cases and the newer CD like cases for all the CDs that I've burned. I never have to buy another sleeves/CD cases for all the blanks that I purchased that came on spindles as long as AOL is in business.

Personally I keep the case and use the cd as a frisbee. Or you can use a drill to cut a bigger hole in the middle and play ring toss with it.

I like the cases (since CD-r 50pack spindles don't come with jewel cases), but I've got no problem shipping back the CDs.
