Senators, White House reach immigration deal

The proposed agreement would allow illegal immigrants to come forward and obtain a "Z visa" and -- after paying fees and a $5,000 fine -- ultimately get on track for permanent residency, which could take between eight and 13 years. Heads of household would have to return to their home countries first.

A new temporary guest worker program would also have to wait until those so-called "triggers" had been activated.

Those workers would have to return home after work stints of two years, with little opportunity to gain permanent legal status or ever become U.S. citizens. They could renew their guest worker visas twice, but would be required to leave for a year in between each time.

So basically, since we know nobody will actually enforce this and deport people who stay longer, the borders are still open.

America needs the labor, Just look at projected employment stats for the next 5, 10, 15 years and they all forecast a shortage of workers. Baby Boomers are retiring and there not enough trained workers to replace them. This bill will help with that

I'm sure Corporate America crafted this bill but that?s a good thing, if you want your local employers to stay prosperous they must have workers to do so. This is more about economic development for the US than anything else.

I view Immigrants legal or otherwise as assets to the US, if there are not enough legal immigrants to fill the entry level jobs then corporate America will turn to illegal ones to stay successful.

I make no other comment other than to state the recent sticking point on such a bill was always in the House. And the question is will the House of Representatives buy in?

I have to say that this law applies to me in that I am a temporary worker.
My parents brought me here illegally as a kid so please, there's nothing I can do about that.

This would mean that my father would have to go to honduras and I would have to help my mom out with work. Where will my father stay? He needs to eat, right? How will I pay for the plane ticket? Sell some of my stuff? What stuff? The little I've managed to scrounge up?

I am glad that I will be able to continue my stay in the states legally but, man it ain't going to be easy.
Politicians forget that this has a real impact on 'those mexicans'.

yeah, whatever.

Basically the Senate is selling out LEGAL immigrants as well as the citizens all because they fear polls that are already slanted one way or another.

The problem is our Illegal market lack diversity. We live in global world economy. America is about diversity. Current Illegal work force lacks Asians, Africans, Middle Easterners, Europeans. This could signal wrong message we hate them, we dont' want them here illegally. It's wrong.

We need to open up, help illegals from Asia, Africa, Middle East, Europe to come and work. More illegals mean lower labor cost. Why should we pay current illegal $5 an hour when Asian Illegals would pick veggie for $2? Or have Africans stationed at Home Depot to build houses for $1.50 dollar? As many have pointed out, shortage of workers coming. Competition of illegals lower wages even more, and brings diversity. Illegals are all benefit. We need diversity of all races, we can't discriminate just because Asians, Africans, Middle Easterners, Europeans can't sneak across border using coytoes. We need to help them come here.

We need to use oil tankers, jumbo planes, to transport them into USA, drop them off on our shores, and let the magic happen. Let not just one countries' illegal come, but all countries illegal come. Diversity is a must in Illegals, otherwise people think we discriminate against them.

Your situation is a common one. This is merely an agreement and has lots of hashing out in both houses before it goes any further. I think the time frame of 8 to 13 years is way too long. My guess is the final bill will be reduced to a few years, with all sorts of waivers for special circumstances such as yours.

I would also be willing to bet that the final bill will have additional waivers for those willing to join the military or get trained in "demand" jobs.

Well said!!! Not only do we need to drop them on an hourly basis, but maybe they will also help strengthen our medical system. Why pay an american nurse 20/hour when we can get an african for 5/hour? The more immigrants the better; i can see the healthcare force increasing, which will help to take care of all the illegals. Also, since they are getting such low wages, they can also apply for welfare as they do now, and keep on taking the free money that all of us legals are dying to give to the illegals! Let the party begin!!!

I feel the same way. I think one of the reasons the US has remained so strong in the past is because of our immigrants. Unfortunately, it seems like we're in the minority who feel this way.

I'm Chinese but the idea that we have to be "fair" with the distribution of immigrants doesn't make sense to me. Canada and Mexico are our neighbors and it makes sense for them to have easier access.

After all, we allow easier access for our family, friends, and neighbors than what we might offer to a stranger from another state.

Republicans are divided on this issue, as obvious by the fact that the President will not veto this bill. On this issue, many Republicans are no better holding office than having a Democrat in their place. At least the Dems make it crystal clear they are in favor of 20 million new voters.

I pretty much support amnesty and tightening our borders significantly to help reduce further illegal immigration. The illegal aliens are living here and reaping the benefits of doing so, they might as well be recognized as legal and start paying taxes like everyone else. Besides, most illegals are hard workers, and we need that.

When Ronald Regan did the same thing in the 80's the political landscape didnt forever turn democrat did it?

You forget that many hispanics are very conservative by culture, very religious, hard working, etc.

If those are not republican core vaules then what are?

We already have such a large glut of unemployed and underemployed people with college degrees and otherwise that the alleged Baby Boomer retirement won't make that big of an impact. Also, many of those Baby Boomers are going to work into their seventies.

I've heard talk of this Baby Boomer retirement for well over a decade and it doesn't seem to have affected employment markets yet. A decade ago, in the science field, people were desperately hoping that aging professors would retire so that jobs would open up for the huge oversupply of underemployed science PhDs. Perhaps a couple positions opened up, but not enough to affect that job market at all.

That's because in the past, people were still expanding into the Frontier (West, Southwest) and jobs weren't being sent overseas. Today our nation is suffering from a population explosion and jobs are being shipped overseas. Consequently, because of the population issues, the strain on the environment, and the huge stress of global labor arbitrage, people have begun to question the dogma that immigration is always good.

You're missing what actually benefits the US the most. Canada frankly isn't that much of an issue because only so many Canadians want to immigrate to the US in the first place and there is a degree of immigration the other way as well.

With Mexico and to some degree the other Hispanic immigrants from Latin and South America, there is the issue of culture and language and assimilation. I'd contend that a certain amount of assimilation into American culture in a reasonably prompt manner is a positive for the long term future of America. If its mostly illegal Hispanic immigrants coming to America, that creates the condition for effective enclaves where Hispanic immigrants may fail to significantly assimilate or learn English since they have Spanish speakers all around them. By contrast if you have greater diversity through a higher proportion of the immigrants coming from locations such as China, Vietnam, and Kenya among other in addition to the Hispanic immigration, this tends to make it much more probable assimilation will occur in a more prompt manner. Vietnamese will only take you so far in the US so the need and pressure to learn English will be much more apparent.

Another issue is as far as conducting international business is concerned, once you have a certain number of employees who can speak fluent Spanish, your needs in that area have really been met. Its much more helpful for the business to also have a labor pool with individuals fluent with all sorts of other worldwide languages, (not to mention familiarity with the culture of that region) to make it easier for US businesses to sell products and engage in other business activities in non-Hispanic countries.

I would accept that ? but would we EVER seal our border? No. So today it is 20 million, years from now tens of millions more. Within our life times 1/4th (not counting their kids) of our country immigrated here and lives in a separatist culture that speaks another language.

And the gangbanger that swam across the Rio is going to replace skilled labor?

The only "gangbangers" i've seen were all born in the USA.
