Sorry if it's a repost. Searched for senator and goodell using the top search field.

The matter may not compare to the CIA's destruction of interrogation tapes, Specter said in a Friday afternoon conference on Capitol Hill, but he added, "I do believe that it is a matter of importance. It's not going to displace the stimulus package or the Iraq war, but I think the integrity of football is very important, and I think the National Football League has a special duty to the American people -- and further the Congress -- because they have an antitrust exemption."

Maybe it's just me, but I really don't think Congress should be wasting their time on this. Sure, I'm curious as to why the tapes were destroyed and what was on them, but I don't think Congress should get involved.

um yeah congress is wasting their time on this...

There is supposedly a recession.

We are in a war with no end in sight.

And we are spending WAYYYY more than we make each year.

But hey, as long as this problem is solved quickly and efficiently, i am all for it!

If they are wasting time with crap like this it is less time they have to devote to screwing us over so let them divert themselves "investigating" all the pro sports they want.

I don't understand why Senator Specter is making such a big deal and wanting to waste taxpayer money on a dead football issue when everyone knows that Congress should focus all of its attention on investigating the Miss America Pageant. I heard the use of padded bras is rampant now.

Not really, it's more sports related than politics, especially with the Super Bowl in 2 days. Aside from that, "news" gets posted on ATOT regularly and this is one of those "news" articles that no one should have a problem with seeing in ATOT. Unless of course you're a towel-waving Gaytriots fan, that is.

Besides, if congress is going to intervene on drug use because they don't think one sport is competent enough to do their own laundry, then what's to stop them from looking into why evidence was systematically destroyed in another sport? No one is immune to corruption and this SHOULD be looked into. Props to you Arlen, you sold us a bunch of BS back in JFK times, but here I fully support you.

Waste of Congressional time or are they only trying to increase rating for CSPAN?

From the same article:

Matt Walsh, a former Patriots video assistant and now a golf pro at the Ka'anapli Golf Resort in Lahaina, Hawaii, has suggested to ESPN that he has information that could have exposed the Patriots prior to the Jets' allegations which ended up with the record fines.

"If I had a reason to want to go public, or tell a story, I could have done it before it even broke," he told ESPN.com's Mike Fish. "I could have said everything rather than having [Jets head coach Eric] Mangini be the one to bring it out."

Walsh, who worked for the Patriots from 1996 to 2003, also suggested to ESPN that he has information that could be embarrassing for the NFL and the Patriots. He has not been contacted by the NFL.

"If they're doing a thorough investigation ... they didn't contact me, so draw your own conclusions," Walsh told Fish.

Walsh said he hasn't made a decision on whether he'll talk to Congress if asked, though he's considering it.

I can't imagine the NFL would bury evidence their current golden boys owed their success to cheating. I am positive they would not care about the effect it would have on the image of the league. The GREATEST fine possible and the penalty of a 1st round pick for the first time in NFL history tells you how serious their offense really was, even though it was brushed under the rug for the sake of the league. The Pats fanbois will cry about the steroid use by the Steelers in the 70's, although every team used them in the period as they were not against league rules until the 80s.

This year they have the offensive talent to get it done, in years past not so much. Most of that success was attributed to the "great" coaching of BB. You only have to look at his record in Cleveland and what his proteges have done to see his true ability as a coach lol. That same Cleveland team he did nothing with went to Baltimore and with the same person (Newsome) aquiring talent won the SB within a few years.

Pats b4 Brady were nothing but one of the all time jokes of the league. They did not have a large fan base to speak of until they started winning recently, and the bandwagoners they attracted make Radier fans look classy by comparision. Once Brady is retired they will return to their role as an annual NFL laughingstock. If the truth about their cheating ever comes out even their recent run of success will be tarnished, as if it hasn't been already.

Congress has made a mockery of our Constitution with the illegal wire-taps without forcing Bush admin people to testify. They have made a mockery of our Constitution by allowing the Patriot Act, DMCA, IP enhanced (or whatever it's name is), the Iraq War, Renditions...etc.

Yet, they *MUST* investigate the NFL because it's a matter of utmost Constitutional importance.

Thank god we have good, honest, law-abiding, and strict Constitutionalist representatives to keep our Constitution safe.

Yes because investigating things that matter is screwing us over.

Lay off the haterade.

The Patriots took their punishment and, I agree, there should have been a more thorough investigation into what went on. That being said, we're talking about filming something that was available via observation anyway. It's not like the Patriots stole everybody's playbooks, filmed their practices, or bribed their assistants. I haven't heard anybody who is a football coach, or related to football, come forward and say that any of this information would be useful, everything that I've heard is basically the exact opposite.

But, hey, you're the guy who keeps insisting Pittsburgh handed the game away to the Patriots and didn't get demolished on national TV.

Actually what I think is weird is that people think that paying the salaries of congressmen, presidents, judges, etc is anything more than a drop in the ocean

LOL @ Alitard trying to blow this up.

First of all, the Patriots have sold out their games since '92/'93 when Kraft bought the team.

Second, give me a break about the videotaping, you're making it sound like recording something out in the open is akin to injecting someone with steroids.

Third, you might want to read steve courson's book on your 'roided up squeelers: False Glory. Your coached sacrificed the health of your players for a continued competitive advantage over everyone else.

"He singles out his former coach at Pittsburgh, Chuck Noll, for turning ``a blind eye to the situation.'' Noll's testimony before a 1989 Senate committee, Courson writes, was ``thoughtless and hypocritical.'' Based on what he now knows, Courson states that if he could relive his life he would not only avoid steroids but would not be"

As far as i'm concerned, Noll is a scumbag.

This "investigation" is a complete joke ... if congress is going to look into any aspect of the NFL's business practices it should be the shameful treatment older players have received in terms of continued medical coverage from the league.

And if you want to have some fun with certain folks around here who are unable to be objective when discussing their favorite teams, just mention the fine job the officials did in the 2005 superbowl.

The NFL itself should be more concerned with:
1) Poor officiating. There is no excuse for how terrible the NFL officiating has been over the past six or seven years. Nomatter who you cheer for, we've all got to agree that the officiating is unacceptable terrible.
2) Steroids. Why is MLB getting so much flack for steroid abuse when it is far, far more rampant in the NFL?
3) Older players. I couldn't agree more with your post. Older players are treated like dirt by the league. Some of these guys have major issues caused by playing for so many years and, unlike players today, they don't have big bank accounts to take caer of themselves. the Player's Association should also be ashamed. They managed to negotiate 900 million in revenue-sharing for current players, but haven't done shit for older players.

though spector is not just complaining about the cheating. about teh fact that the NFL controls where/what games shown on TV and they are blocking local games from local channels to show on the NFL channel.

Which i do agree that is bs.
