Senator McCaskill failed to pay personal property taxes

Not really excusable for a public figure but at least she seems to be taking the blame and not deflecting. "It's my fault" is rarely ever heard.

Dead on accurate right there, she screwed up and owned up to it. Not many folks do that anymore, it's much easier to throw someone else under the bus.

So she used tax payer dollars to fly on her own airplane? Brilliant!

Where do you get that from? Doesn't make any sense.

Now that she has paid these taxes she has another very large itemized deduction to take to reduce her federal income taxes.

LOL Let us all celebrate the honesty of politicians who get cornered like rats.

Larry Craig still refuses to admit his gaydom. And he was caught red handed. Er, footed.

Also, unless I misread she was the one who came out with the info about her taxes, it wasn't discovered by a reporter or anyone else. She could have tried to quietly pay it off or sit on it or something. Probably would have been discovered anyway but...

Hey if the voters wanna yank her next year more power to them.

As the lefties in here so often like to say, since the Democrats are always preaching about the rich not paying taxes, they should be held to a higher standard. Just as they say Republicans who preach family values should be held to a higher standard. There sure seems to be a lot of tax cheats on the D side of the isle these days.

POLITICO busted her on billing taxpayers for her political trips. That part would be debatable - it's a fine line between Senatorial duties and politicking - except that McCaskill has repaid the money. That led to the discovery (by POLITICO) that the plane in question was actually owned by the McCaskills, through a shell company created in Delaware to dodge taxes, and THAT led to the public discovery that her plane's property taxes in Missouri had not been paid. She didn't come forward, she got caught red-handed in some sophisticated theft. Which is doubly unfortunate because McCaskill is one of the better members of the Senate Democrats in my opinion, neither extremist nor particularly partisan except in those every vote counts instances where they are all partisan. If this is how the good guys (and ladies) behave, imagine how the ass hats behave. Point about Craig though, pleading guilty and then attempting to recant after sentencing. Remembering him is always good for a giggle.

The other thing that comes to mind is damn, Missouri is a bad place to be rich! (Although thinking about it, there are no bad places to be rich, merely good places and great places.)

“Over the last four years, cash-strapped school districts and the children in these schools have been deprived of these much-need funds because McCaskill avoided paying taxes by hiding her assets with a Delaware shell company,” David Cole, Missouri Republican Party chairman, said in a statement.

LOL, nice one, dude had to be laughing as he wrote that.

1) so redistribution is good now?
2) but what about the children?!

LOL indeed. McCaskill needs to personally give each child his or her penny fraction.

Our regulations on taxes and on campaigning are so complicated that often enough, people who think they are dodging taxes honestly turn out to be dodging taxes illegally. Same with campaign financing. I'll give McCaskill the benefit of the doubt and assume she intended to game the system rather than to break the law - and rank hypocrisy is merely par for the course with politicians. Disappointing in her case, but it puts her about even with most politicians in my ranking.

I would decry the privileged political class, except that I'm sure that anyone with the wealth to own a multi-million dollar plane would be treated much the same as long as they promptly paid up when caught.

Disappointing as I personally like Claire. She's very intelligent and has a streak of independence that I admire.

I don't understand why these types of things are not prosecutable offenses.

Where is the interest?
Where is the penalty?
Where is the audit?

Interest and penalty are probably figured into the #s shown.

What audit is needed?

In Missouri you have to get a statement from the county that says you paid your property tax before you can get a driver's License. Plus she is an accountant and claimed she was going to clean up corruption in government when she ran for office. Cant fix stupid. Where is censure?????

And where tax evasion can be proven they are prosecuted. Maybe most just file a 1040 and call it a day, but many people have myriad investments and holdings that amounts to a shitton of paperwork and mistakes get made. She's worth somewhere between 20 and 45 million. I don't think she would risk jailtime for 70k/year. She's admitted her error, it doesn't excuse it, voters will have their say. Prosecutions for paperwork mistakes or oversights in complex returns would be idiotic and not cost effective. They pay what's owed with penalty/interest and no harm done. The cost of the criminal prosecution would be far more than that recovered so it would make no sense to pursue.

I bet if that were any of us we'd be in prison for tax evasion. Any bets she won't be? Like with Turbo Timmy it will be chalked up to a mistake and swept away.

She sounds like one of those "evil rich" people the Dem's have so much hate for.

Oh wait, rich Democrats are not evil. Damn, I keep forgetting that.

I'm proposing that any tax related offense committed or "omitted" by a politician or other public official be an impeachable offense.

Or like the ones committed by Clumsy Clarence, they will be argued for by the blind followers and those that believe in party above everything else that they person must have made an honest mistake and just have been too stupid and incompetent to fill out a simple form, but must not be removed from their position impacting the lives of every man, woman and child in the country.

Every year the county sends you a personal property declaration statement that specifically asks about aircraft as well as other personal property like vehicles. This statement must be signed and returned every year.

PAGE FOUR
You should report all vehicles, which should include all cars, trucks, trailers, boats motorcycles, ATVs and aircraft that are titled in the name of your business entity. Do not include leased vehicles or farm equipment in this section. Vehicles titled in an individual’s name must be reported on that person’s individual personal property account, and not on the business account. Houseboats should be reported to the county where they are docked, and aircraft should be reported to the county in which they are hangared. Please give us complete and detailed information as requested on the form. Information provided should include VIN, motorcycle cc’s, trailer description and length, aircraft N ‐number, etc.

Please sign and date the form at the bottom of Page Four. An unsigned form is not a properly prepared declaration and may not be accepted by the Assessor. Please provide us with a contact name, phone number and email address, in the event we have any questions about your rendition. Please be certain to return your declaration to our office by March 1 to avoid a late filing penalty, as mandated by statute.

You might want to check out the book, "To Harass Our People" by former congressmen George Hanson. He compares the IRS to the Nazi SS and shows how the IRS has more power then the SS ever did and uses it to promote various political agendas.
