Playing devil's advocate, you could interpret that as "the people" not "each individual person." Kind of like "the people of this country have a right to create taxes on themselves" but you can't go tax your neighbor. It's the collective that has the right, in this case enacted through well-ordered militias, not necessarily every citizen period.

Would you argue that the word "people" means the same thing in the following text:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures"

To me "keep and bear arms" doesn't imply having them locked up away from the citizen militia, but this might be a debate for another thread.

Why would it read like that when the guys who wrote it just finished a war with the country that ruled them? If that "law" was in effect and properly enforced the people who wrote that amendment likely wouldn't have been able to defeat England because they would have been very short on arms.

The founding fathers were as concerned for freedom from despotic rule in their own country as from foreign invaders. Protections for speech and against search and seizure had nothing to do with the Chinese.

Having the government keep all arms locked up puts us at the mercy of that government.

So, confiscating just half of all weapons, searching just a few of the cars driving through a check point, frisking just a few of the people walking down the street, kicking down the doors of just a couple of houses on the the block, and wire tapping just a few phones makes it OK? Hmmmm,

For it has already happened, and will continue, 1 law, 1 ban, 1 ordinance, 1 code, 1 Czar, 1 panel, 1 new bureau, 1 more power, and one executive order at a time, and all begins with a,"debate". Started years ago where it was easy, (San Fransisco, etc), expanded to an easy State, (Cal./NY, etc). Does not matter who is in charge, the president, cabinet, administration, house, senate, or supreme courts, THE goal(s), and the march continues.
