They're happy to say they're the party of the average American against the 'elites', but that's a nice lie for getting elected, exposed when put to the test.

If the tax cuts for those making less than $250,000 passes before the Nov elections, then the Republicans, assuming they get the majority in the House/Senate, will have to defend a bill for tax cuts for the "rich".

The bottom line is, if they cannot compromize by accepting the expiration of the cuts for the rich only, then the cuts will expire for everyone. This would not be good since lower and middle income people tend to spend their paychecks, and spending is what we need people to do right now.

Humor me. What federal income taxes do "lower" income people pay?

Payroll. But this assumes you know what the fuck you're talking about and, well, you seem to be a little slow on this one.

Btw, totally predictable. Republicans don't want to make Dems/Obama look good before the elections even at the expense of the middle class and a distorted belief that trickle down tax cuts on the rich make a significant difference, while Dems are playing politics with middle class tax cuts by dangling the rich tax exception in front of Repubs.

lol, yet another thread trying to blame Republicans for the failure of democrats.

I think Ronnies dimentia is contagious there CAD. Who made the tax cuts expire because they they were passed in reconciliation and had to be made to expire? One can blame the democrats for many things but the Bush tax cuts and trickle down economics is not one of them...

Entend what their pops? The tax cuts? Btw I am 42 and lived through and payed taxes during those horrible years the 90s.....

One can be all for smaller government and lowering the deficit. One can also be for stimulus and spending our way out of the economic crisis. Wanting to extend these tax cuts for the 250k and over is a stimulus for the wealthy... Its not a very good use of 700Billion but it is what it is.

You cant have your cake and eat it too. Decide...

I emigrated to this country in 1980. Our house cost 60k in the suburbs of chicago, I payed alot more proportionately in taxes back then. Ronnie even raised some taxes if I remember correctly..

Again these tax cuts were not payed for and didnt have their intended effect. Well the advertised effect anyway..

None of that has to do with what I posted. Any failure to extend the tax cuts this year will be entirely on the democrats. They hold the majorities.

They did trickle it all down, to the third world countries!!

Bitches can't have it all. Either get dragged down to third world country levels or keep your comfort here.

So when they put a bill out that extends the tax cuts for everyone except the 250k and over and the filibuster is used by the republicans its the democrats fault.. Gotcha...

I personally think they should extend all of them for 2 years with a gradual increase over 5 years of the top percentage back to the 1990s rates. I will get personally get taxed higher since my wife and I are in that top bracket.... It would make a small change in how we save but otherwise my quality of life does not change...

Letting the Bush cuts expire entirely would increase taxes for everybody except the lowest 20% of incomes rather than just the marginal rates for incomes above $250K.

Following the Dems' proposal, rates would go up only on that portion of taxable after deductions income above $250K. Even for the vast majority of those paying more, they wouldn't be paying a lot more.

Only the true Bush constituency would actually pay much more at all, and I figure they can afford it. Taxes would still be lower than during the Reagan era, way lower than pre-Reagan, even for them.

Dems need to hold the line on this. If repubs fulfill their promise, they'll just be handing Dems a bludgeon-

"Republicans voted to raise your taxes!" And it'll be true...

I want to see Obama get on national TV holding up the bill and say to the American people:

I have in my hand here a bill introduced in the Senate that keeps your income taxes at their current level if you make less than $250,000 a year. Every single Democratic senator is ready to vote for this bill. But Senate Republicans refuse to allow a vote to take place. They are holding YOUR tax cut hostage to the interests of the wealthy. The Republicans are going to force your taxes to go up by 10% because they want the rich to be even richer.

He could do that but he'd be lying yet again. The democrats haven't even tried. If it was important to them(and not some political game/ class warfare stunt) they'd atleast try.

Surely that's the intent with this push before the election. I thought the R's were going to sidestep the punch after Boehner's comments Sunday, but it's good to see McConnell and the rest step right into it. I was almost in a full-blown mental crisis, my perception of reality shaken to the core, when it looked the R's might actually play ball on this.

Kudos to the republicans for standing up to the usual class warfare arguments (even though it's probably for the wrong reasons, political personal gain). "hey, they are rich, they don't deserve to keep the same tax cuts the rest of the population should get! Get your torches and pitchforks!". The republicans need to hold the democrat's feet to the fire: extend the tax cuts for all, or face the wrath of the population for raising everyone's taxes during an economic depression.

For the record, I don't make anywhere near $250k, so raising taxes on that group does not impact me. That doesn't make it right, so I'm 100% against it.
