Senate blocks appointment of unqualified left wing radical

Phew! Thank goodness for some repub senators, or we would have had another completely unqualified nutjob as a federal district court judge.

He's never even been a judge (hey, apparently you don't need any experience to be a supreme court justice either, look at Kagan), he's admitted to favoring judicial activism, holds all sorts of radical ideas including reparations and generally is a loon.

Thank goodness that the senate blocked his nomination. :thumbsup:
 
Liu had testified against the nominations of Supreme Court Justices Roberts and Alito.
Sounds like a smart guy to me.
We need more geniuses like Clarence Thomas and Harriet Miers on the Supreme Court.
 
I realize that "Professor of Law at the University of California at Berkeley" and opposition to President Bush's Supreme Court nominees push a lot of "Conservative" buttons, but do you have anything else to support your "unqualified left wing radical" or "unqualified nutjob" characterizations?

As regards the "unqualified" part, I suppose one's personal definition of what counts as qualifications/experience would be important. Anyway from wiki:

Prior to his nomination, Liu had not served as a judge and had argued only one case at the appellate court level as a lawyer.

Sure there was some minor stuff -- several rapes, convicted serial killer, that sort of thing -- but good God man, he was a professor ... at Berkeley!!! What more do you want?

His qualification may be questionable, but PokerFace flatly declares him "unqualified" and adds both "left wing radical" and "nutjob".

Out of curiosity (too lazy to do the research myself), does anyone know how many current federal appellate court judges do have prior judicial experience?
Is the OP merely assuming that an appellate nominee without judicial experience is unusual, or are there statistics to back it up?

An appellate nominee without judicial experience is somewhat unusual, but by no means unheard of. Hell, a large percentage of Supreme Court justices had no prior judicial experience. (Rehnquist, Warren, and a whole load of other ones) So, judicial experience certainly isn't required for high judicial office.
 
You say he is unqualified to go over the decisions of lower courts, PokerGuy? Well, just what are your qualifications for determining the makeup of the courts?

Ah yes, I forgot that in the conservative world an IQ of 70 grants "perfect" perception.

That is in no way the only qualification to be an appellate judge, and historically not necessary. He also has experience as a practicing lawyer, a Supreme Court clerk, DC circuit clerk, worked in the Executive Branch, and in academia. He is extremely well qualified.

As some of the posters have already pointed out, you have no idea what the qualifications for a supreme court judge are. Some good supreme court judges haven't had a lot or any appellate judge experience when they were appointed to their positions. This is besides you being a partisan hack, as per bolded section above, which is behind the motivation for you posting this thread.

FWIW, the appointment at issue is to a federal appellate court, not the Supreme Court.

I am neither kind to nor patient with anybody behind me in intellectual growth. This usually results in what is effectively the expectation that my subordinates lay down 15 years of high level philosophical thought in 15 minutes, but that's just a cross to be borne around me.
I'm glad I don't have to put up with me. Even though the eagerness to improve and the brute intelligence of someone like myself would serve to soothe my impatience, I'm always going to be a bit snippy towards anyone beneath me.

I am an excellent student, but I am in no way emotionally suited for teaching.

So quit wasting my time.
