Sen. McCarthy

Just Curious what people here think about Sen. Joseph McCarthy? Do you think that he helped our country or hurt it. Just to throw out an idea, some say that he violated the constitution, but so did Lincoln. Just curious what people think.

he was a dumb@ss. His commision on "unamerican activities" was the biggest load of bullsh!t since prohibition, not to mention the fact that it was unconstitutional(1st amendment and probly others).

Edit: how did lincoln violate the constitution?

he suspended habeas corpus in all the border states and threw anyone in those states in jail who disagreed with him or spoke out against him, especially maryland

Yes, but is that really a bad thing. I think in that case he didn't have a choice if he was to keep the union together. If MD had seceeded, DC would have been surrounded on all sides. There are allowances written into the constitution for special times, in fact i'm not totally sure that that was a violation. An interesting note: On federal hill in Baltimore, the cannons were pointed in towards the city in case of a southern sympathy uprising.

then, if you justify lincoln's actions as a necessity to keep the union together, would mccarthy's action's be justified in keeping the constitution together (in that he prevented communist infiltration which would undermine the very principles on which it was formed)? just wandering
