Semprons to get AMD64 - Socket 754 worth it?

It's already been mentioned that the Sempron line is going 64 bit (obviously rebadging the 754 socket Athlon 64's) to compete with the Celeron D 64's.

Is Socket 754 worth it in this case? As a cheap upgrade path - since dual channel does not do a hell of a lot for the Athlon 64 at this point... or has that changed?

What does that have to do with if socket754 is worth it?

The 64bit Semprons will still be s754 I would imagine, so I don't see the link between the two (64 bit and s754).

Okay - let me rephrase that - is Semprons are moving to 64 bit on the S754 platform, S754 has just as much potential as 939 minus Dual core. With the nForce4 S754 motherboards out there, bang for buck 754 seems to be the best bet. But the question remain - how long is 754 slated to be around? Futureproof for a little while?

Hence - is it worth it?

754 is dead socket. Go 939 for Dual channel + the X2'2..

Price difference isn't that large.

In my opinion, socket 754 is definately the best bang for the buck. Socket 754 will be around long enough for the near future. By the time you'd upgrade to something faster, you'd want a new motherboard anyways. You can currently upgrade a S754 up to an Athlon 3700+.

The price difference is pretty large if you are budget oriented.

The cheapest S939 cpu is $146 (Venice 3000+), while a S754 Sempron 2800+ is $86 (256K cache). The motherboards (comparing MSI Neo) are about $13 cheaper.

MSI Neo NForce 4 + CPU price comparision

S939 Venice 3000 + MB = $234
S754 Palermo 2800 + MB = $161

The Venice is the better processor, but the S754 is better bang for buck.

If s754 Sempies get 64bit instructions and you don't plan on going dual core, then heck yeah. You can't beat the price/performance.

I don't think it's a big deal... I think it's just a checkbox feature since Intel plans on having 64-bit Celerons. I guess it's a good thing though since having more registers available in 64-bit mode will probably help reduce the effect of the smaller cache sizes. This shouldn't effect whether you chose Socket 754 or Socket 939 though. It should only effect whether you get an Athlon 64 or Sempron. 64-bit Semprons bring it that much closer to the Athlon 64.

scroll down. s754 is dying.

Just because its dieing, doesnt mean that it isnt great for a budget system now. Even a low end sempron will handle the basic needs of most budget pc users needs.

Socket 939 is the future of the mid to higher level platforms. Socket 754 might be dieing but it makes a good budget platform.

I thought the same that there would be 32bit S939 chips? (Semperon?)
Guess its not cost effective to make a strictly 32bit cpu any more?

s754 Semprons have never been stricty 32-bit

they were made with the 64-bit extentions disabled

Yes they did, and you can technically buy them I think. I had a friend who has a Sempy on S939.

Also now that semprons are getting 64bit both sockets are pretty well dead. Once AMD moves to DDR2 both will most likely be phased out at the same time
