I just got that $99 Fry's Sempron 2800+ combo for a cheap setup for my parents... and man is it quick. Its quicker than my own rig (1.6A o/c to 2.0). I know I know, haven't had time to upgrade it yet...

Anyways, i'm loading webpages and they are instantaneous with this chip... now i kinda wanna con my parents into switching comps... :)

They do run at 2ghz, and is essentially an Athlon xp chip, and we all know that xps aren't exactly slow. Just not very competitive anymore.

technically you've got an AthlonXP ~2450+ (2400+ for the same speed (133 x 15) == (166 x 12.5), and an extra 50 PR points for faster fsb, 133->166)

btw, this is to my 'scale' :p

Yes, if you compare a 2.0 GHz AthlonXP to a 2.0 GHz P4 I think you'd be hard pressed to find something that the P4 would be faster in. I'm not sure why this would surprise you.

Anyone have a suggestion on which to buy? I need to build a cheap 2nd gaming system(cheap cause i am a poor pizza delivery driver)...For the same price i can get either a amd xp 2000 or a sempron 2400..I am guessing about the same speed overall..just wondering if anyone has any suggestions before i blow a weeks pay on it..lol...life does suck.

What kind of memory do you have?
If you have PC2100 you need to get the Athlon 2000+, as the Sempron 2400+ requires PC2700 RAM.
If you have PC2700 and are into overclocking get the Athlon 2000+, you will likely be able to run 166MHz FSB and get 2083 out of your processor.
If you have PC2700 and are not into overclocking, get the Sempron 2400+, same speed as the Athlon 2000+, but faster FSB and RAM speed
If you have PC3200 and are into overclocking, get the Sempron 2400+, you will likely be able to run 200 MHz FSB and get 2000 MHz out of your processor. Chances of this are even higher than the 2000+ @ 2083.
If you have PC3200 and are not into overclocking, get the Sempron 2400+

But the cores are exactly the same for both processors and they both run the same speed, so the RAM/FSB speed and multiplier are the only differences between the two. Obviously any overclocking requires a motherboard that will do that as well.

Sempron = new AMD cheap cpu. It's about the same as a tbred, except the 3100+ which is socket 754... so it's an Athlon64 without 64 support and with only 256k L2.
Opteron = Socket 940 Athlon64 with support for Multiple procs (except the 1XX line). The same as a 940FX with locked multi's and multicpu.
Athlon = Generic term for pretty much every AMD processor. There were Athlons, then Athlon XP's, Then Athlon 64's.
