I'm trying to figure out which is better a Pentium 4 1.7 Ghz or a Sempron 2500

I currently have a P4 1.7 and need to either buy another board ($40-60) or sell the P4 (for around $40-50) and get a sempron 2500 board combo (about $87).

I don't want to spend much as you can see.

It's for my parents. They surf the web, email, bookeeping, a little photo work. No games at all.

I would think the 1.7 P4 would be goosd enough. The Sempron will be faster for sure, but it probably won't matter for their uses. In this sort of use, getting a new hard drive will have a greater impact on system performance than the cpu.

Semprom 2500 will kill P4 1.7 in anything. But for they use your parents are giving to it, it will be more than enough.

Yeah it is, only 50 bucks. It would be the same as a Sempron for their parents. Don't waste time on trying to find a buyer, just get a cheap 478 mobo (or whatever socket it may be), and get that thing running. Sempron won't matter when it comes to your parents using the comp. Because if you think about your time adding up to just figure this out, it's actually a waste of time if you're going to put up the extra miles for a Sempron.

Meh, 1.7 p4 is plenty for email and minor photo editing. Whichever is cheaper/easier for you, do. The sempron would slaughter the P4 (I assume it's a willy) but your parents would never know anyway.

Good point, there were different p4s. Which one is it exactly?

It's a P4 1.7 Ghz 478 chipset 400 fsb

I ordered a board from Newegg. I don't think I've ever upgraded an Intel P4 before because I always use AMD. Hope it goes smoothly.

Just stick to whichever is cheaper. Only enthusiasts or people using their computers for something scientific or gaming will ever notice the difference between those two processors. Hence, just go with whichever is cheaper/easier.

Just get more memory for your current system and do a reinstall with the latest drivers.

ditto on a 7200 rpm hard drive- that they can see, and memory think 356 mb with 98 and 512 with xp
what OS?
since they are websurfing and e-mailing you DO need enough horsepower to run software firewall (not xp) anti virus, and anti spyware- are they on dial up?
Webroot 19.95 at spywarewinfo till the 16th, or msas if xp, or Counterspy for 19.95 for real time protection
plus spywareblaster, mvps hosts (or other) Ie-spyads, etc and tighten down IE and run windows update
trust me a spyware infection will ruin YOUR week.

methinks bookeeping (especially banking/ bill paying) and websurfing/ email are two things not to do on the same computer

They are running XP home. I just upgraded their hard drive wd 80gb with 8mb buffer. And they currently have 512mb of pc2700. Video card is weak but good enough for their needs. Geforce Mx 200 32mb. The board I bought http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157030 has integrated video. Intel Extreme 2 Graphics 64mb. I might just use the integrated video.

They have 2 computers the 2nd is for my teenage brothers to play games on. My parents are on slow dial-up. And I make sure they have and use all the latest protection (firewall, anti-virus, spyware etc.).
