I'm building a cheap system that will be used for web surfing, mp3, watching movies, viewing lecture notes (pdf/powerpoint), and some programming. It's gonna be a socket A system and I'm not sure what processor to get. I'm buying the parts at a local store, so here are the cpu's i'm considering (prices in Canadian dollars).

Athlon XP2200+ 1.80GHz $99.97
Sempron 2400+ 1.67GHz $75.95
Sempron 2500+ 1.75GHz $95.95

My main question is does athlon xp or sempron have a better price/performance ratio? Is a Sempron basically equal to a Tbred B with the same clock speed?

If you're gonna get an xp, get a barton core, otherwise, might as well go with the sempron, it is the same as a tbred b.

about the same..Sempron should have better core but I believe that might not be enough to sway quite a few on these forums..:)

The Sempron runs on the faster bus too. XP = 133mhz (until 2600+ and higher) Sempron = 166mhz. If I were buying socket a cpu's, I would get Barton. But between the regular XP and Sempron definitely get Sempron. The higher bus will make a small difference in performance over the slower bus.

I agree. If I was buying a S462 CPU right now I'd get a Barton core chip, probably another mobile XP. The one I've got now is superb, excellent price/performance ratio. But if I had to choose between Tbred and Sempron I'd get a Sempron.

Ya, Sempron performs well on Socket 754, but on Socket A you are better off going for Barton.

I would recommend going with the Sempron 3100+ and Socket 754. It is more expensive but well worth the little extra money from the prices you listed.

If you want to go Socket A then you should get a low end Barton or a really a Mobile Barton and overclock it. It will still cost less then the prices you posted and will be faster.
