Sempron... is it used only for note books

I am new to some of these things...so bare with me. I was thinking about buying this barebone system and need to know something. I thought that Sempron was only for mobile notebooks? Can a AMD Sempron 2200+ 1.5GHz Socket A Processor(product # 80139-R @ zip zoom fly) be used in this one below and/or in any just like it as long as it is ...socket A and the proper MHZ/FSB ? It says that a Sempron cpu can be used as long as it is an socket A at 333fsb.

This system will be used for a 7year old's first computer.

Sempron is just another brand name for Athlon XP's. Just make sure you get the Socket A type as there is a socket 754 version.

Semprons are the new Durons. Model 8 versions have the Athlon XP "Thoroughbred" core, while Model 10 versions have the Athlon XP "Barton" core. All Socket A Semprons have a 166MHz FSB (DDR333) and 256KB of L2 cache, except the 3000+ which is a Model 10 with 512KB of L2 cache.


2200+ = 1.500GHz (Model 8 or 10)
2300+ = 1.583GHz
2400+ = 1.667GHz
2500+ = 1.750GHz
2600+ = 1.833GHz
2800+ = 2.000GHz (Model 8 or 10)
3000+ = 2.000GHz (L2=512KB) (Model 10 only)


There is also the 3100+ which is a Socket 754 CPU with 64-bit extensions disabled. EDIT: It is 1.8GHz

Not the new duron, more like XP. look at the price difference of duron 1800mhz vs semptron 1.8ghz

Regardless of prices now, AMD has discontinued the Duron and is marketing the Sempron as its entry-level budget CPU of the future. Sure it looks fine now compared to Athlons, but down the road compare it to Athlon 64s and up, and it will be the Duron of that day. And of course it's limited to the 32-bit world only.

FWIW, I got my Duron 1.8 for $38, used
