I helping my friend buy a budget computer. He wants to do audio work, plus some gaming. I found a deal on a 3400+ compaq for $450, but it says it has a 128kb l2 cache. Everywhere i look it says the 3400 has a 256kb cache. what's the deal?

If they offer the same or similar systems with other processors, it might just be a failure to update materials; I've seen most of the A64 semprons advertised with the 'wrong' amount of cache at one time or another.

It doesn't seem to matter though; clock speed has a bigger effect than cache for these chips.

If the rest of the system is a good deal go for it; make sure there's an open AGP or PCI-e slot though if gaming is an issue, a lot of budget systems leave this out.

thanks... didn't even know they had 939 semprons. been blowing to much money lately to pay attention to the budget market. Good deal though, that means he should be able to upgrade later on.

oh and 3chord, while speed does matter more than cache on AMD's, it's been found that 128kb really castrates K8 performance on games. but with monitor included for that price, who cares?

The socket 939 Semprons have been available for a while now, but nearly exclusively in "name brand" systems. Only way for anyone to buy one besides buying one in a Compaq/HP would be to get one used on Ebay from someone who upgraded.

mordantmonkey, is it an LCD monitor? If so, that's a really hot deal.

A move on AMD' part which leaves my feeling they've given me the bird. Thank god Dell hasn't yet gone AMD. Wonder what little we'd have to choose from if that deal had gone to bed.

no, it's 17" crt. but it's 450-50MIR, so for 400 it's a pretty good deal... however i only get that price through my job, and i can't post the coupons here.
