I was thinking of upgrading my current system to an Athlon 64 3200+ 939 processor, but can get a good deal on another system sporting the Sempron 3400+ Palermo 939 chip.

I believe that the Sempron only has 256 cache to the Athlon's 1MB, but they are both 64-bit chips.

Does anyone have any comparative information between the two? Any links to benchmarks?

Again, please this is the 939 Sempron 3400+ not the 754, so please only provide info to the 939.

thanks!

There really isn't much info or review out there on the s939 Sempr0ns, since they are technically only for OEMs.

I just realized the Sempy is only 2.0 GHz, same as teh 3200+.

Unless you can get the Sempron for much cheaper than a 3000+ or Opteron 144, i'd wouldn't get it.

At the price level of the Athlon 64 3200+ (which is about $170), is there anything else out there that is a better chip? Overclocking? OR even choosing not to Overclock?

The semprons are pretty good chips for the money...but good luck finding one for socket 939. I'd heard the only ones that were actually for sale retail cost more then they were worth when the A64 was out there.

We might see better availability of them later on.

The only difference is the cache, with the A64 3200+ having 512k and the various Semprons having 128-256k cache. The 2x cache size is good for another 100-300MHz in the AMD "+" rating, depending on which side of bed the marketing droid got up on in the morning and how strong his coffee was.

Office Depot and Best Buy just has some HP systems for sale with a 3200 and 3400 939 sempron for $200 and $250 respectively. That was for the whole system, so I was contemplating going for one instead of upgrading my current Duron system, in which I was going to put a new Mobo, 64 3200+ (939) , and 1GB DDR 3200 for around $300.

I didnt know where else I should post and AT frowns on making new threads so I'll brag here.

I just ordered a sckt 939 3200+. Only 160 bucks and it has decent performance.
Seriously considered a 4800+ but its horribly expensive and I know the sckt 939 platform has better stuff coming out every month. One day I'll go ahead and get an expensive dual core CPU, but for now I think I did better by keeping it cheap.

In reference to the OP, a good rule of thumb is: If you arent sure, go low-end. Save your money and wait 6 months or a year. What was once high-end will become mid-range and much cheaper.
