Sempron 2800+?

Is the Sempron 2800+ still a good choice for a budgeted system or I should pay that extra $100 for a Venice and 939 MB?

I am planning to pair the Sempron 2800+ with a DFI Lanparty NF3 250 MB for downloading and viewing videos mostly. Is there a cheaper board that will allow me to OC the chip? And what's the best choice of memory should I get if I decide to go along with the Sempron?

As you might know the socket 754 is supposed to be on the way out. And so is AGP that you find in almost all of the socket 754 mobos. So your Sempron 2800+ with a DFI Lanparty NF3 250 MB is defacto obsolete.

On the other hand, if you don't really care that much about 3D graphics/gaming. then your Sempron is not a bad deal. Check out outpost/frys for some cheap combos. Or newegg has some deals going now for combos: NewEgg promo Looks like a Sempron 2600+ and BIOSTAR K8NHA Grand Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250Gb for $66 + $64 - $20 discount for the combo. Throw in some cheap PNY 512M memory on their combo list for $41.55 - $10 combo discount and you have the start of cheap, but fast system.

As for memory in general, the A64s require DDR 400 (PC3200). The PNY mentioned above will do, but it is not considered one of the best memory. Show around and you might find some better memory for perhaps a few dollars more.

Personally, I tend towards buying what was hot stuff a year or so ago, for a bargin today. But I'm still in AMD XP land, milking the last out of my O/Ced XP mobile waiting for a big enough bump in performance to justify an upgrade. I'll most likely jump to socket 939 and PCI express just so I have something I can get some upgrades for in the future.

if your only going to use it tasks and downloading things, a 2800+ sempron would handle it easily. Their not very good in gaming unless your overclock them, then they become mid-gaming machines.
