I have tried to get enough info to make an informed decision but... I'm just not gettting it to make sense.

I was going to get a 3100 but I can save $20 to use on other parts, if I get a 2800. Other then clock speed, is there a difference?
I seem to recall the mention of QNC only on 3100? Is that right? are there other things like that?

thanks for all your help.

Yes, Cool n' Quiet isn't available on the 2800+. It is on the 3100+ and above.
Actually, the price difference on Newegg is only $13.50. That's a 18% increase in price for 12% increase in performance. Mathematically, the 2800+ is the better buy if you run it at stock.

If you intend to overclock then the 3100+ will give you added value since it has a higher CPU multiplier. That will give you a better chance at reaching a higher overclock. Also, if Cool n' Quiet is important to you then the 3100+ is the only way to go. Are these features worth $13.50 to you? That's what you'll have to decide.

Can you still use CnQ when you overclock? Anyway, I've never understood how it could help much on desktops. Notebooks, sure, but desktops?

I have a 2800+, and as you can see I got it to 2.4 GHz on stock cooling. A 3100+ will usually reach 2.5. So you're essentially looking at $13.50 for 100 MHz increase. Personally, I'd just go for the 2800+, but of course it's your call.
