Sempron 2600+ Palmero vs. Celeron D 315?

I am building a cheap microATX box for surfing/Office (no games, no Photoshop, etc.).

AMD Sempron 2600+ Palermo 800MHz FSB
90 nm
1.6 GHz
L1 Cache: 64KB+64KB
L2 Cache: 128KB
Retail: $63.00

Intel Celeron D 315 533MHz FSB
90 nm
2.26GHz
L1 Cache: 12KB+16KB
L2 Cache: 256KB
Retail: $68.50

Sempron. Probably cheaper and runs cooler. For web\Word you won't be able to tell the difference between a Pentium III, a Celeron D, Duron, Athlon XP\64\FX, P4 EE, etc.

For office/surfing, either will work. If any foo^H^H^H enthusiast pitches in and tells you "Celeron/Sempron is crap, integrated video is crap, VIA/SiS chipsets are crap, you have to get Nforce4 with PCIe graphics" you can safely ignore them.

I would suggest the Sempron 2800+ because it has 256k L2 cache. Either of the mentioned chipsets should work fine, but if you're feeling wealthy you can get boards using the ATI chipset (OMG, an enthusiast board with integrated video).

Make sure you get the Sempron 64 2800+ ($76) with the latest x64 and SSE3 instruction sets, and E6 stepping. Don't get the 32-bit version.

And are you sure you don't want to go with a full ATX board and overclock? I got my Sempron to 2.4 GHz on stock cooling. That seems like an awful sacrifice for a SFF box.

I'll be making this microATX/Sempron box to work along side a X2 4400+/2GB RAM/GeForce 7800GT box. The Sempron box just needs to be cheap and small.

Hmm. It doesn't appear the socket 754 platform has any decent overclocking options for the mATX form factor. But socket 939 is another story. Too bad it's so expensive.

well sempron 2600 got mine up to 2.5 stable not 64 bit (wasnt offered at time)
but it is awesome like a vencie with lower cache

Just put a Sempron64 2800+ in my DFI Lanparty 250GB and its rock solid @ 2.5GHz. with stock cooling. I couldn't ask for much more than that. Actually I haven't tried it any higher than that, but it did prime for 24 hours at that speed with no errors. Maybe I just got lucky, but I'm happy 🙂

Running on a Sempron 2600+ for 5 months now, but was thinking about getting Celeron D before (glad I didn't). Handles everything I throw at it nicely. Behaves well. Will sit and bark on command. Runs at 48 Degrees, aircooled. Definitely the btter choice.
