Picked up a little Sempron 140 NIB (sealed) and tried it on an ASUS M4A79 Deluxe and it says it was sucessful and goes past the post sceen but after that is just hangs...? Tried a bit more voltage with no OC`ing but no go...? Anything else that can be done...? Or even try...? Newest bios BTW...

What do you mean 'unlocked' exactly? What did you do to the CPU? I wasn't aware that you could 'unlock' a modern Sempron chip, but I'd try undoing whatever you did and see if it boots fully then.

Also, does that motherboard boot up with a known good cpu? Do you have some different RAM that you could test? Will the system boot if you attempt to boot of an OS CD or a Linux LiveCD?

Sounds like the second core is broken. Only thing that could work is more voltage, but I doubt you're going to get anything out of it.

Yes the board is good I had a Phenom II 925 X4 in it... The newer Sempron 140 Sargas cpu`s are Athlon X2`s with one core dissabled for one reason or another (either defective or marketing...?) Anyhow the board I am using can unlock unused cores if the cores are not borked from the factory... The little Sempron 140 in question boots and runs just fine with the one core and OC`s to 3.7Ghz just fine too but am trying to get the other core to unlock which it does and post as an Athlon 4400e processor in the post screen but just past that it blinks for a few seconds with a few hits on the HD and then it just sits...

Second core is no good. Sorry bro. I've had this happen on a 555 BE and it is so frustrating. You can crank the voltage to like 1.5v but that's about it. It likely just isn't a good core.

Its hit and miss on even those processors which are known to unlock and those that actually can unlock and function properly.

You could upgrade to the Sempron 145 and try it again.

I've seen some quotes of people saying 95% of Semprons unlock successfully.

Yea figure this one just wont do it... :'( But for $23 shipped it still works just fine and is very surprising even as a single core...

Might try a Sempron 145...? Wonder if they would make a board that would accept 2 Semprons (in case of another bust)...? But figure they have that blocked as well...?
