semi-rant: we need a lane for manual drivers only

hey retarded automatic drivers. you see this gap i leave in front of me?
i'm not doing it to piss you off. i do it for a reason so you can stop tailgating, high beaming and honking at me, cuz i ain't budging.
you're not going anywhere anytime sooner because we're all stuck in the same bumper-to-bumper traffic.

and it'll actually save you some gas when you coast, rather than flooring it just to slam on the brakes 50 feet later.
and it saves brakes too cuz you won't be riding on them half the time.

/rant

No, you're annoying. That gap is quickly filled by others trying to get to their destination while you're too lazy or stupid to properly modulate your clutch to stay with traffic.

Because I choose to coast I'm annoying?

1.2/10

I was going to give you 2.1/10 but then I noted the lack of capitalization. Also, did you post this from your blackberry while driving? If so, you lose the 1.2.

This... and, traffic is perpetuated by people switching lanes left and right trying to find the "faster" lanes. By leaving so much space between you and the cars in front of you, you are giving them a lane to go into (assuming you are leaving car lengths in front of you)

yes. coasting in such traffic is stupid.

True people will merge in front of you, but it's really not a big deal. If you are pissed because there is a manual in front of you who decides to not ride peoples asses in bumper to bumper traffic, then you need to fuckin destress, relax, and leave for work 5 min sooner...

Since riding peoples asses gets you there oh so much faster.

no caps cuz it was only a semi rant.

yeah, they're going to be 1 car ahead of me. that's real progress there.

and actually, i'd do this in an automatic too because nothing is dumber than tailgating behidn someone. not to mention dangerous.

so it has nothing to do with modulating clutches, but the less i engage/disengage, the longer the life of my clutch so it's a win-win for me.

Just because one doesn't leave car lengths in front of them, doesn't mean they are riding peoples asses. There is an inbetween.

What does it matter if they leave a half mile as they coast/drive slow to catch up? You're still in traffic and won't get there any quicker being closer.

Hey, if I were in that automatic who saw a gap you so "kindly" left for me to jump into... hell, I'd gladly take up the empty space. It's not my fault you decided to coast and help me get to work faster. 🙂

See my first comment again, that is what happens and all it does is create more traffic for the people behind you.

So in regular driving, do you practice the samething?

How big a gap are we talking about?

depends on the flow of traffic. if bumper to bumper, i'd say 1-2 cars length.
if under 30 miles, but stop and go... i'll leave 3-5 cars length.

That's annoying. I would pass you or ride your ass.

The net effect there is that you're allowing traffic to flow around you. And if I'm behind you, you're allowing traffic to flow around me.

So screw your cheap ass, trying to save $0.008 worth of gas. Get out of my way, I've got somewhere to be.

It's not like I expect you to stay within 7 feet of the guy in front of you, but come on.

if the gap is more than a car and a half... yeah, annoying.

ok, sit back and think for a second.

why is it annoying? cuz psychologically, you think you can move so much faster and farther because of that gap you see in front of you. but look ahead of that gap, what do you see? brake lights.
so in actuality, how much faster are you going to be?

Slow driving "coasting" people are annoying and I would even argue that driving as such causes traffic problems.

OP is right, except for thinking it's all about manual/automatic drivers.

I was actually taught to do the coasting thing, even with an automatic. If you keep rolling and don't stop completely, you end up using less gas (probably not that much).

However, remember that EVERYONE is in a damn hurry. No one has 5 seconds to spare, they MUST get past someone not going their ideal speed. And thus, flooring it 50 ft, and braking quickly is good; people believe that you are holding up traffic since it "forces" them to want to pass. With that in mind, screw it, just jam your accelerator, brake hard and be like everyone else.

so you'd rather speed up, then brake hard, then speed up, brake hard, etc. more wear and tear, burn more gas.
sure, be my guest and go around me.

it's a waste of space. I'm not saying to tailgate the hell out of people, but in stop and go traffic 1 car length is more then enough (and if it's not, maybe you shouldn't be driving).

I'm curious what you do in everyday driving (no traffic).

I don't where you live, but here in Atlanta people will jump into that space. It noticeably slows down that particular lane as more and more people jump into the 'gap'. I commute ~90 miles every day in a manual (either bike or car).

It's annoying because it's unnecessary and screws with the NORMAL flow of traffic. It doesn't take a lot to cause one lane to go 10mph while the others are going 45mph.

The only exception would be for 18-wheelers which should be in the right lanes.
