Hi guys,
My friends and I live in two different countries. I live in the USA and he lives in Norway. Is there a way to transfer big files over the internet directly between the two computers? We both use Windows XP Pro. We both got broadband dynamic IPs.
We are trying to transfer video and picture files of our families. We are tire of the limited storage on the free FTP sites.
We would like to directly transfer the files securely over the broadband.
Thanks.

dcc (in IRC) or AIM come to mind as the easiest way to accomplish this, I do both fairly regularly.

Just install ftp on both computers. Don?t know how fast your upload is, my 256k cable connection takes forever to transfer big files.

I sent a 700mb file to a friend in about 7 hours with FTP. I have a server that I fire up when we want to share something. :) I have 3000/256 broadband, so obviously the limitation is the 256kbit upload speed.

FTP:
One of you will need to run a server app and one will need to run a client app. Since you are both running XP pro, I am pretty sure that it has a basic FTP server program (could be wrong). If either one of you is behind a firewall, there could be some issues, especially if the files are large,
but ftp is the way to go.

Just use ICQ for the easiest setup.

FTP is nice, but IIS FTP takes some knowledge to set up.

IRC takes a bit of work if you don't know how to use it.

Actually, I wouldn't use ICQ on a bet! Too many nutjobs trying to hack you. :)

guildFTPd is a piece of cake to setup, and it's free. It'll allow you to run an FTP server without screwing around with ICQ.
