I have this HUGE tower that is virtually useless to me. I bought it when pc games consumed my life.... and now its just a major pain in the ass. I was in the market for a cheap netbook to hold me over for the semester, but I would have had to eventually buy a mac for art school next year. I really wasn't too keen on the idea on getting two laptops particulary since the netbook maket is exploding and god know's how much my netbook would resell for in 8 months... But I found a good deal for a macbook air.... though its not the best spec'd, but its small, and powerful enough to run my adobe apps.

DELL XPS710:
T6600 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo
3gb ram
160gb hdd, 80gb
7900gt 256mb
xfi
dvd burner

macbook air:
1.8ghz Core 2 Duo
13.3-inch glossy widescreen display
2GB memory
80GB 4200-rpm PATA hard drive
Built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
Built-in iSight Camera

I was thinking about swapping out the hdd with a ssd in a year or so when they become a bit more affordable, and using a portable external for movies, music and such in the mean time.

The kid is offering $800 for it which would pay for a large chunck of the air. The remainder will be picked up by my parents. ... fair trade? Or am I being a moron? Keep in mind this tower is like at least 50 friggin pounds. It almost brings me to tears everytime I must move that freaking refrigerator.
 
1.8ghz, 2gb ram, 80gb? its good enough for me. I really need a small pc that I can slip in my bag without it being a hassle to lug around. It should suffice for some photoshop work, differently better than trying to deal with a netbook and being forced to buy a macbook in a few months. Plus the price is right.... 1100. I might be able to get 900 bucks and someone owes me 250 so its pretty much a straight trade. I'm so sick of carrying that dell's fat ass all over the place.
 
Owning a mac would hurt my pride more than the dell would hurt my shoulders lugging it around. I dunno dude, I just have a bad feeling with this.

It sounds like you're already pretty sure of what you want though. As long as you know what your getting yourself into.

the main point is of the thread is trading this huge 50lb beast of a dell a good deal for a macbook air? It's a refurb, so I'm gonna wait till the warranty is dead and then stick a 1.8in ssd in... hopefully prices drop significantly by that point.

But does anyone have some information about the core2duo in the air? I can't find any deep specifications, or even basic information. All I could find was that intel had teamed with apple just for this cpu for some reason....
 
Do you guys think the 1.8ghz, 2gb MBA is a bit underpowered for photoshop/illustrator work? I'd for sure upgrade the ram to 4gb whenever my funds allow....
 
Do you really need that kind of mobility? Can't you just get a normal sized, normal priced laptop and stick it in a backpack or something? I use a 14.1" T61 which weighs around 5lb, and I barely notice it when it's on my back. The Air is an overpriced underperformer.

why not just get a macbook? theyre not exactly huge or heavy to start with and itll have more power (and expansion/ports) than the air for the money.

or hell, its adobe stuff, so you dont *need* a mac. new thinkpads T series start at about $900 and it would blow that air out of the water, and those are relatively thin and light (say 5lbs or so).

Yea I need something realllly light and small. I'm not a big guy sow when I have a 5lb 15.4inch laptop on my person I'll notice. This is something thats going to be in my bag nearly constantly, so I want to be as mobile as possible. I'd also like to stick with apple since I'm more accustomed to using OSX for design work.
 
Nothing wrong with getting the mac air if you don't mind spending the money. But, their hard drive is murder. SSD it immediately. I went with one of these for my notebook (3 year old toshiba with similar specs to macbook air).

I installed windows 7, 2GB ram, and the SSD, and the performance is like a brand new machine.


Obviously you realize you're not getting bang for the buck. But it is still quite a capable machine that is ultralightweight, and a very nice form factor (i.e. not an eeePC)
 

No disrespect but if someone is giving you $ 800 for that XPS you need to run to him and deliver that system...... Then worry about this after. Even if you don't have a system for a few days while you figure it out........
 
oh... excellent question... that certainly throws a wrench in the operation :disgust:

I could've sworn I've heard about mac air's with SSDs, maybe I am tripping or maybe you need a higher-end base model air?
 
Well, I'm sure there is an SATA model out there, but I'm pretty sure they don't build SSD with PATA interface. Heck, why is Macbook Air using a PATA hard drive anyway?
