What are your views on selling mmo related "stuff" on ebay? Most of the terms of service forbid selling accounts, characters... or do they. I think most people get around that by selling their time but is this really ethical?

a beta invite? yay or nay?

gold?

characters?

I'll tell my story after I get more info from the crowd here.

No I dont think it should be done. I understand you put time into a game, but ITS A GAME. I played FF VII, I thought it sucked, but If I go sell that game, I'm not going to charge people for the saved game (I know its one memory card). I think it ruins the fantasy aspect of the games when you can go buy whatever you want if you have the cash.

Makes it more realistic, just like real life where you can buy whatever you want if you have the cash.

It is pretty straight forward that it is against the rules that are spelled out in the TOS. People still do it. Some get caught and some don't. Most of the companies have a pretty strict policy about it and if you are caught cheating or doing something against the TOS your account will be locked and you will have just flushed your cash and time down the crapper.

Gold no, characters yes. I don't want some mad noob rich 50 year old ruining my servers economy with his asian farming kru. But I don't care either if that same guy buys a full epicced character and noobs himself and is labeled an ebayer.

rampant abuse of selling ingame money and items has destroyed a lot of games by totally destroying the ingame economy

Whats so unenthical about it, its not like you are frauding the person in anyway, they are pretty much paying for the time invested in the game.

I sold some UO stuff a while ago on ebay, figured I pretty much broke even after paying all the monthly charges

I don't see anything wrong with it except that it violates the TOS for the game.

It's a really poor way to make money, though. Look at the return you get for the time you put into it and you're making pennies.

Here's my situation.

I have stopped playing Wow as of about 3 weeks ago.. Glad i finally quit it. I played since open beta and only paused for 1 month in between but I'm glad to say I finally kicked the habit.

I have a few level 60 characters, however, one in particular is a fully epicd out tier 1-2 horde druid. Druids are pretty much in demand for a lot of guilds and I think I could get some good money for him. I'm not out anything--I played the game for fun and got it, but it seems like a waste to just let my character sit there when it could make me a few extra bucks.

I also recieved multiple beta invites on my account (no idea how that happened), and sold them on ebay for a total of around $1000.00. It allowed me to purchase a 32 inch lcd and I might get another very soon.

Its not supposed to be realistic though. Its a game lol.

If people do this to make it more realistic then they shouldnt be playing games. Go to a park, read a book, volunteer at your local community center, do something!

Well, it's all about the EULA. Plain and simple. And until consumer law gets rewritten to actually PROTECT consumer rights, software licensing comes in a very gray area.

Until then, you have to read the EULA to know your rights. Currently, most EULA's are worded carefully enough to close the loophole of selling "your time". Basically, most MMO EULA's contain a clause stating that they own all rights to IP derived from the game, tangible and intangible. And as such, they usually also list that you may not legally "transfer" ownership of the account associated with the game in any way, shape or form. In plugging the "account" hole, they basically are saying that all that time you invested cannot be recouped monetarily, as you are the account holder of record, and to transfer that title would be in violation of the license agreement which you agreed to by creating the account in the first place.

Despite what people think, as unfortunate as it is, just because you went to a tangible store, and bought a tangible item, it does not mean that you own it. The ownership is retained by the developer/publisher/distributor/whatever, and you are simply paying for the right to use it - just like a driver's license. If the cops feel that you're not fit to carry a driver's license, they can and will take it away.

It is pretty sad that companies can make up laws willy-nilly. Unfortunately, that's the power our legal system gave them in order to prevent certain abuses. But as with everything, governments and legal systems cannot be perfectly forward looking.

Good for you. Sell some of those characters that are in high demand to see if you can make another $1k

Nothing wrong with it. The company might tell you you can't do it, but they really are not looking after your best interest and the validity of such EULAs is questionable.

great, thanks!

I'll list my druid and other characters tonight and see what happens. Wonder if Blizzard will shut it down...
