I am selling my laptop and want to wipe my hard drives clean. There is alot of private info on these drives so I'm looking for a pretty secure and complete wipe. My first instinct was to boot a linux live cd and use the shred utility but I don't know how well it works. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Get a program that zeroes out your harddrive. It overwrites the entire harddrive with zeroes so that, even if someone were feeling particularly snoopy, it would be difficult to recover any data you previously had on there. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that a simple format will make it all go away.

We use a utility called G Disc at work. Don't know if that is freeware or not.

Never tried dban, but killdisk is free and super easy to use. Burn iso, boot to cd, follow prompts, zero'd out disk.

I used Eraser before..but man DBAN is scary powerful because it doesn't require you to boot into an OS. Hot.

you can also use that bootable maxtor program tool that simply gives zero's to your entire HD, but I guess you already decided on DBAN, never heard of it :)
