My Grandson will be away at college for 2 years-He has a 2004 ford mustang base 6 cyl. 40th anniversary edition 4spd. auto. trans. He wanted to sell it but now wants to keep it. His insurance is high and his mother doesn't want to pay for it while it sits in my driveway. Thats another problem, I can start it 2 times a week but have read suggestions not to. Everything I read about having this car sitting in my driveway for 2 years makes me want to talk him into selling it, especially since used cars are now in big demand and prices are way up. I know he will kick and scream to keep it, but storing it with no plates and only being able to start it and maybe go back and forth in the driveway might ruin it Please help

Isn't there some low mileage insurance policy that he could get for it? Then you could drive it a few miles every so often, get it warmed up and make sure everything stays lubricated.

A vehicle can sit 3-4 months at a time. Just disconnect the battery until needed.
You can even put it up on blocks to save the tires.
Once you start it, let it run for 15-20 minutes to properly circulate fluids. If on blocks; put it in gear for that time frame.

If owned free & clear; there is no need for required insurance; He may wish to have some comprehensive in case a tree falls on it.

One could pay $20/month for a storage shed; run it around the storage lot.

selling car with no plates and no insurance

Whose name is on the title?

Say no to parking his car on your driveway, problem solved.

In AZ, a car can be registered as non operational and don't need to have insurance on it.

Sell it. You're gonna have critters living in it, the paint will fade, and if you live anywhere up north it's prime time for that thing to start showing rust.

It's not like that car is anything special. It's an overweight rental car.

In NY anyone under 25 pays a steep Insurance premium-plus he has had 2 accidents, low mileage low premiums are for me and my wife who drive 9k miles between us

Taking care of that car for 2 years will mean some work if you want it to stay in good shape. It's just not worth the trouble, imo.

It should either be driven regularly, or sold.

He should sell it, bank the money, and buy another car when the need arises.

It's in his mothers name, who lives 40 miles away, now that she's married. He has always lived with us. The problem here is I put no thought into this at all. If I put this car up for sale, how can someone test drive it. I guess there insurance would cover them, but what about plates? I'm going to have to get in touch with the DMV and Geico. The whole family was mad at me when I bought him this car, and now I agree with them. Owning a Mustang in the northeast is dumb, but I didn't know that then. Spoiling your only grandson can get them killed. Thank you all for the replies.

tell him to put your name on the title so you can insure it for much cheaper, then drive it once in a while.

That Mustang is unlikely to get him killed. It doesn't have much power.

It is an interesting special edition of the car, though. I can see why he might not want to sell it.

In 2004, Ford produced a special 40th Anniversary Edition of the Mustang. As an $895 option available in both Standard and GT editions, coupe or convertible, it consisted of 40th Anniversary badging, enhanced interior with "40th Anniversary" floor mats, painted folding exterior mirrors from the Cobra models, a tan cloth convertible top (instead of canvas), Arizona Beige painted "Bullitt" wheels, and Arizona Beige stripes on the hood, trunk and lower bodysides. The anniversary package was available in Crimson Red (exclusive to package), Oxford White or black. Ford produced 4,558 Crimson Red models. Crimson Red, Ford paint code "FX", was also called Merlot on several other Ford models from 2002 through 2008 model years. All 40th Anniversary package cars came with Parchment (tan) leather interiors. Other than two pro-production units, all Crimson Red vehicles were built from August through November 2003.

His car is silver with black interior, and other than the 40th anniversary sticker, I see nothing special about it. I am the one with the mental problems. I was just on the phone with him, he was calling to ask me to transfer some money to his ATM card, when I mentioned selling the car, I was told that's a conversation for another time.

Technically, it's her car. Have her sign the title, and you can sell it to whomever you want. Test drive would be very limited, around your neighborhood.

Make the conversation happen, be firm about it.
