Selling a car on Craigslist

I got a reply from a guy who asked if I could send him the VIN so he can run a check.
Sounds reasonable, but just wanted to see if there was any reason it would be a bad idea to send this to him. With all the CL spammers and scams, I wasn't sure.

If VIN scams were viable you wouldn't be able to walk down the street with a digital camera and capture the full VIN of all non-garaged vehicles.

That's what I was thinking.

Yeah, I figured I was being paranoid.
But with all the various scams out there, just wanted to make sure.

Thanks

Yeah don't worry too much about it. Although I would ask for a copy of the report, could help you out if he decides not to buy it.

Agreed with others, give it to him. If he was wanting to scam you somehow, there are plenty of car dealerships websites with plenty of used vehicles with the VIN plastered right on the webpage.

Some banks need the VIN to pre-approve for a loan.

That's a good idea to ask for a copy of the Carfax report.

VIN should have been in the posting. When I see one without i think they may be hiding something.

eh, most people don't think to do this. and they are just not familiar w/ selling a vehicle (really, how often does one usually do it?). As long as they're willing to let me check the VIN, I'm fine.

Now, if a dealer didn't post it up, I'd be weary.

Hell half the postings don't even tell what motor / transmission combo the car has (if there are options, of course) I just think people don't know enough to provide pertinent details. You have to love posts like "Honda civic for sale" without mileage, motor, transmission, options, etc etc 😛

I've seen ads where they said they wouldn't give the VIN. I was thinking, wtf, you want me to drive all the way over to see the car so I can write it down? Am I going to steal your car's identity? I guess some people even wear tinfoil hats.

Dont forget the part that says "Runs gud, no email, phone only" and then there is no phone number

im willing to bet most people dont know what it is and dont realize how harmless it is to give the VIN out to people who ask for it

Carfax requires a VIN. I wouldn't touch a used car (as a buyer) without the seller providing the VIN.
